I have 219,2XX and my valves need a little adjusting. I plan on adjusting them sometime in the next month or two but not quite sure how to do it.
Anybody have some help for me? I have a book for my car that tells you how to do it but isn't really specific in that area.

Hey guys I'm thinking of purchasing a 2004 Auto V6 2WD PreRunner Ext Cab that has 301k. I haven't been able to physically check it out, but cosmetically it appears to be in perfect condition. Which tells me they must be mostly highway miles. It's definitely a good deal, however, I still expect the motor to last another 30k before replacing the motor. But to make sure I'm not replacing it even sooner, what are some things I should look for? I figure you guys are the experts here. I'm sure with that many miles the bearings alone will need to be replaced. I'm making it a point to try and find out the oil changing history, maintenance history in general, specifically transmission fluid care, and rear diff. Anything else I should look at while I'm there? Any tall tale signs of this truck being abused or taken care of? Regardless of what they tell me I'll be checking the oil and tranny fluid to see how fresh or black they look. Thanks folks.

Hard to say, at 315,000 miles that vehicle could need virtually everything that wears out on a vehicle. The only way to tell is to start investigating.
Don't expect that you will need a rebuild. Mine has 318,000 and I am confident it will run another 100,000 miles.

Is there a 400k club?
My '96 Tacoma SR5 4x4 5VZ-FE is at 427,237 miles.
original engine (no rebuild)
oil changed every 3k miles
just changed timing belt, water pump
tuneup (plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, PCV, oil filter, oil ( Quaker State 10 W30) radiator flush, and radiator fluid, thermostat)
Needs a new radiator in future ( rust inside and a lot of fins are bent)

Hi Guys,
I am at 394K with my 96 4runner. All has been heaven untill about four months ago when she started having to turn over a few extra turns to start, and than water misteriously dissapeared from the radiator. She ran great for a while than I began getting an engine miss code, she was running rough at times. So sad.
I bucked up and did wet and dry compression tests. It seems I had a leak between the 5 & 6 cylinders (right rear two cyls). The wet compression test gives me 120-130 lb for each cyl. Not like new, but even. I was tempted to just do the top end but now have decided to let better judgment rule and rebuild the engine. Or should I buy a rebuilt? Any Ideas?
I was hoping I would get to 500K before having to rebuild the engine. It would be kind of cool, but, hey, she nearly made it to 400K, not too shabby!

If you have plans of rebuilding or buying a rebuild, see how far this engine takes you first. Crank the stereo up, sing your favorite song and don't worry about it. Personally, I would rebuild it. I have had so many troubles with other people rebuilding my engines (I am very critical, lol).
My truck just hit 431K. I am putting a new clutch and new shocks on her. I found out I snapped the second leaf from the top on both sides in the same spot. I know my 3.4 is leaking everywhere, and it cranks a bit longer too before it starts. I figure if I make it to 500K I will be happy enough. ROFL, it is like a time bomb waiting to go off. I don't know when I will be stuck on the freeway somewhere. Kind of scary and exciting at the same time !!!! Good Luck

im at 310650 and still going solid. recently did a compression test and got 205 on all 4 cylinders, which is incredible if you ask me. I need to replace the power steering pump and a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. also get the knuckles serviced. other than that, just minor little things to make it run better.

Bassbro,
Hey thanks. I kind of agree with you, but the OHC heads look like a lot of trouble. I was thinking I will do the block, buy the heads (or have them done in a shop around here)
BTW I am still on my second clutch and going strong!
I have ordered the parts for the Tundra brake mod, those warping disks are the one thing that bothered me about my truck.

Hi
Just did the Tundra Brake upgrade on my 96 4Runner.
1.5 hrs to bolt up, 1hr to flush the brake system,
WOW is all I have to say. I had had three sets of rotors that warped ASAP after replacing. These Tundra rotors work the way they should, smooth, quiet, easy.
Thanks for the how-to forum!
Next: rebuild my 5vz-FE

Almost There!
I'm at 435000ish kilometers which puts me at 270300 miles so almost there.
If my 1990 had any type of maintenanace or maintenace regime before I got it I'd be laughing!
I'm working on all kinds of projects right now, she's still holding on...

I replaced the clutch in my truck because the idiot that had it before me replaced the clutch but didn't shave the flywheel. What a waste of a new clutch!! Needless to say it chattered like mad :/ When tranny was out I spotted my engine leak problem. Both valve covers are leaking in the rear. Have to wait to make money enough to keep her going :/

1998 LTD with Locker, bought with 189,000 on ebay last year, now has 204,000 miles
So far I have done the following:
Mobile 1 & K&N filter every 5K
Tranny Cooler install, & drain n fills
Differential and TC synthetic fluids, bolt gaskets, will probably do every 50k or so
OEM Spark plugs, and NGK wires
Throttle Body and MAF Cleaning
199mm Tundra Brake upgrade, full brake fluid swap with power bleeder
Spectra Air filter...My K&N 33-2050-1 did not fit
Bilstein HD and coils
Power Steering Fluid swap
Driver's side CV was busted, so replaced with an Advance Auto GSP, will rebuild the OEM one
Cosmetics:
All Dash lighting converted to Blue LEDs, bright white interior/tail/map LEDs
Flat black interior painting project, rear done, doors n dash still to go
99 4runner center console
Failed attempt to repair tear on driver's side leather
