I believe the 2.7L to be just as if not more reliable than the 22re. Mine sat boiling in idle with temp gauge above red for an hour and was fine. Also sucked rain water in through intake during a pretty long drive and no issues. It's almost as if the unit thrives on abuse.

The first step is to read this thread, since the question has already been answered. The next step is to find a way to switch the exhaust, as the 22RE and 2RZ/3RZ have the exhaust on opposite sides.

Yes, but you need the bellhousing that was behind the 2.7 (3RZ). The bell bolts to the 22R/E trans, and of course to the 3RZ.

I personal have had bad luck with a 2.7. My first blew a head gasket at 89,000 with all dealer maintenance. Dealer fixed it free of charge but then at 112,000 jumped time and bent valves and what not. Dealer didn't cover it so I fixed it and sold it. Before that I had a 89 with a 22re and it had almost 300k when I sold it. But... My buddy has a 98 just like my Tacoma but 2wd, and his was bought in 03 and he has well over 250k on his. I guess I just got a lemon. I now have a 05 tundra with the 4.7 with the trd super charger and sport package and could not be more please. As well as my fiances 99 4runner with the 3.4. I've heard good things about the 2.7 so I'm still not completely scared of them... Still can't beat the 22re though. Mine was my first truck at 14 and drove it all over our family's property until I could drive legally and I gave it more hell than any truck should ever go through. Go with whatever makes you happy and you'll like it man. That's how I look at it.

Since this thread is now 11 years old, it seems right to keep it going.

I have a 2000 4Runner with a 2.7 that just ticked over 200K. It runs smooth and just keeps going. I've kept the oil changes up, and the only thing I've fixed was the water pump. Good engine.

22re are indestructible but I don't think you will be disappointed in the 2.7.

Hello this is my question. I own a 99 taco SR5 with 400K on the truck and am Quite happy with it. But have access to a 4x4 auto and want to know if it will bolt toa 22 R motor?? I also havea 84 B2 that I am considering on putting a better motor in . would like to gave a carb motor in it to replace the 2.8 V-6 ford. So what motors will fit a auto that is behind a junk 2.7 I have access to

I have never had a 22RE, but I have been driving a 1st Gen Tacoma with the 2.7 3RZ for the last 17 years or so. It has NEVER let me down, getting close to 200k now and still going super strong. Until I got my 3rd gen 4Runner, I was convinced that the 3RZ was the best engine Toyota ever built, but I have to say I like the 5VZ even better. Anyway, that's my two cents. I think the 3RZ is a great engine

With enough time and money, anything is possible.

Realistically however, it would probably take much more time, money, effort, and frustration than it is worth.

The 3RZ-FE is a longitudinally mounted engine while the 3S-FE is transversely mounted. This in of itself creates many challenges.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to do this swap?
