I think the general concensus is that he has the J-pattern shifter.
I was not aware that the push button j-shift was ever an option on the 99-00 highlander edition. If so it was not a standard option and had to be specail ordered.
Hence why we are ruling out the push button t-case options all together.
And wouldn't you think by now that Mr. Justinh would have stated if he had a button or not since that seems to be what we have focused this thread around?
If not please inform me when the topic changed to specail order 4Runners, I would be glad to start a seperate thread on the topic!

I agree it is better to be prepared then sitting in you chair bangin your head with a keyboard cause you prdered the wrong part.
But statisticlly all the highlander models came with the J-shift pattern t-case unless it was speacil order, which is highly unlikly since its rare to do to begin with.
Even when searching through eBay and Craigslist, I have never come across a highlander edition in 99-00 to have the push button j-shifter, if you can find evidence of a 99-00 Highlander Edition with the push button j-shift case, please do share.

The way this shifter functions is.
1) Press Button All-Wheel Drive Engages
2) Pull back on shifter, Lock center differential into Four Wheel Drive High.
3) Shift Auto Transmission Into Neutral, Then Push Stick over and up Into Neutral then Four Wheel Drive Low.
4) Reverse Steps 1-3 to get back into Two Wheel Drive High

This thread began as a good and informative discussion but quickly turned into a lot of insults and impersonal differences.
To be fair to everyone, i deleted all of the posts that contained attacks and/or statements that added to the chaos.
Hash it out all you want, but don't turn it into personal matters.
If you wish to continue, please stay ON TOPIC.

I think he is saying there is something wrong with the brake lockout on the shifter and he can't get it out of park.
I had this happen to my truck soon after i got it, i just used the white button/leaver override switch at the top right corner of the shifter base to override it.
After i did that it worked fine from then on. No idea what caused it.
You might need a flat head screw driver to get to the switch, you want to push it either forward or backwards, i think backward.
