STERFRY's 1986 SR5 4Ruster build

just picked up a 1986 SR5 4runner for $600. Why so cheap? Well back in 2018, the town I picked it up in had a really bad flood 3 years ago

Unfortunately this was one of the salvage trucks, hence the low price.

As you can see I need to weld in new floorpans.
The fuel pump is wired to a switch, I flipped the switch and the truck fired right up! Is running a bit rough from the bad gas and the many, many vacuum leaks. The clutch is completely toast, stuck is the engaged position so I currently has 7 neutrals. I opened the bleed valve on the slave cylinder and verified that it works. The master cylinder appears to work too. I tried bleeding the front brakes and they got fluid, however the rear lines and ruptured right by the fuel tank, so thats probably where all the fluid went. There are a few electrical issues too, the blower fan only works on high, I'll need to replace the whole climate box as everything in it is rusted and the controls are seized, oh well, easy replacement. The frame has lots of surface rust, I think it's salvageable. the rear springs sag a lot, will probably replace those. The body has 'minimal' rust for my location, can just cover them with body filler. The PO sprayed the truck with bedliner, but it is peeling off, I will peel the rest off and paint it a new colour. Oh yeah, all the windows work too (including the rear)

I'm bringing it to my school tomorrow and it will stay there until everything is road safe

I'll keep updating it here.

Thanks guy. Finally got it on a hoist. I don't have many pictures, but I got the clutch free, it engages the wheels so I might get away with driving it until one comes in the mail. I started grinding the rust off the frame, and luckily there is no rot. I've been able to get a bit done. I'll probably have to take the body off sometime and grind the the top where I can't reach.

I've also dropped the tank and pulled out the rusted brake lines. They were replaced before, and the original lines were still there, along with the new rusted lines. From the fuel tank and up, the lines are good, so I'' just be replacing the lines from the connector by the tank.

But yeah, it should actually turn out pretty nice, took the top off, because 4runner.

Well finally got time to finish the brake line. And drove it.

4WD works too hopped the curb with ease. Will definitely need to turn the rotors and replace the pads. But everything shifts nicely.
As I was dropping the tank to access the remaining part of frame that needed grinding, I bent the high pressure line and put a pinhole in the line right off the pump. Tried brazing it but unfortunately it was too rusty. Called everywhere and the only place I could get a new carrier was from toyota..... for $300 something dollars. Yeah no, time to farmerize it.

So I just drilled the line out and put in some high pressure fuel line. Should work fine until I find a carrier at Pick and Pull.

Now that the frame is done I've started taking the interior apart, only had enough bedliner to do the back part. I still have to remove the sound deadening and cut out the rust holes.

And hopefully the carpet comes out clean

Also, what would be the best way to get bedliner off the paint? the grey paint underneath is in very good condition still. Would look much better than the peeling liner.

Well I've fixed 90% of the rust, all thats left is the drivers floorpan, and a few spots in the rear.

I didn't like my welds very much so I went around each patch with some bondo, on both sides. That should seal it all fine.

Over the weekend I brought the tailgate home to sand down and primer, dug into some rust so I'' slap some more bondo over that and call it a day.

Okay a few new updates.
I finally fixed the fuel pump circuit. Finally it runs without a manual spliced in switch. And all it was was the main EFI relay I wish I checked it sooner, but it clicked=it works clearly isnt't right.
I also replaced the dash bulbs while I was in there.

Next up, I didn't like looking under the hood and seeing a crusty engine:

so I painted it:

And finally, I had some ball joint spacers sitting around so I put them in

now she sits high.

On the alignment rack

good enough

Well it's been awhile. The 4runner has definitely changed a lot, I've also been driving it for about 3 weeks.
First off, I've swapped the non-working EFI for a weber 32/36 carb.

I probably could've fixed the EFI, but this was easier

Runs decently, still could use some work. Now, I didn't want to drive it looking the way it did, so I painted it rustolium grey.

Well a LOT has happened so sit down for this one.
I'll try to go in order as much as I can.

I ended up driving it up until November.

Ended up coming across a crashed diesel hilux. Pulled the N/A 2L out of it, along with everything I needed for the swap. I took it off the road to do the swap and so I didn't have to drive a classic 4runner with a bunch of idiots on ice

Repainted it, swapped oil pans, and dropped it in. Just in time for snow

Out with the old... And in with the new.

So for the wiring. Because it is a simple mechanical IDI engine, all I need to run it is an ignition wire to the Injector pump, a relay setup for the glow plugs, and of coarse the alternator and starter mess.
I hooked the battery up and tried firing her up with a jerry can full of diesel. And...

As of today, I've dropped the fuel tank and pulled out the 36 year old crusty fuel lines

Old lines
