Thanks guys. It was such a good feeling when it cranked up. I'm in Mather, just outside of Rancho Cordova.

BTW: He was joking in the video...... besides the "open door" light, which we might have figured out the cause of , the only code/light showing is the ABS. I'm sure that will be an easy fix (at least compared to the prior work).

Well the doors are back on and the power windows and locks are all temporarily wired and work with the 97 harness. Once I get the tailgate wired up I'll post some pics of the wiring.

I've gotten all of the doors wired up except the front passenger isn't quite working right so I need to make sure it's wired up right.

The problem I'm more worried about is the tailgate. The 91 has one relay for the power window, wiper, & sensors which recieves imputes from the switches.

The 97 has a body ECU that gets signals from the switches and sends signals to the back door ECU telling the motors and stuff what to do. Here is the 91 diagram from the file I have:

And here is the 97:

I've figured out how to make it all work so here is my problem. The factory service manual wiring diagram I have is for a 1996-2002 and it says there are five wires going into the back door ECU, Yellow, Blue, Blue/red, violet/white, white/black.

According to the diagram the Yellow is switched +12V, the Blue wire is constant +12V, and the White/black wire is ground (ground wire color is consistant everywhere in the vehicle). Easy enough right.......well my wiring harness doesn't have a yellow wire. I found a Gray wire that has a constant +12V but the diagram doesn't even show a gray wire for the back door ECU.

I don't have a violet/white wire either but I do have a Blue/red. Since the Blue/red wire appears to be a signal wire I'm not sure how to test it with a test light.

If you look all of the way to the right of the 97 diagram you'll see a keyless buzzer componant with Pink/black and Pink/green wires. I don't have either one of these colored wires either.

So is it possible Toyota changed the colors of these wires over the years so my diagram doesn't show the correct colors for my 97? If anyone has a 97 year specific wiring diagram for the back door ECU I could use some guidance.

Thanks!

Problem solved, but I haven't had the time to finish it yet. The FSM I had for years 96-2002 isn't correct. The 97 does not have a main body ECU (at least not that the tailgate controls go through. Basically the wiring is the same with just a few different colored wires.

I did finish one of the two "plug and play" wires last night. This is for the driver's door. The 91 wires come into the cab and plugs into this harness which plugs into the 97 wiring.

Tailgate and brake/tail/turn lamps are all finished being wired. All four doors are wired and working properly.

When we moved the air inlet over behind the dash it made the 91 passenger side hinge unusable. Now the hood will be latched using the original front and two hood pins for the rear.

And for the first time in a year and a half the rig sits in my driveway at the end of a work day without a car cover on it.

The exterior is complete for now. The front brush guard will be completed at a later time but for now it's DONE!

Items to be completed now is very short, basically the interior installed, which shouldn't take too much time since there will be no carpet for now. Just install the seats, seat belts, side panels, and the center console will need a little customizations.

After the interior we will replace all of the brake fluids, a fresh oil and coolant change and it will be ready for the registration process.

Here it is with the exterior complete.

Well, the seats are in and we drove the runner to lunch on Tuesday.

It drove great! We still have a few other items to finish up on it before it can get legally titled/registered but we are only a few hours from being finished.

It only took a year and a half.............

Yes it was a lot of work.

We got it VIN checked, smogged, and registered on Wednesday. It's officially on the road and out of my driveway.

What is that red thing in the garage? It's kind of blurry and far away, Is that a prancing horse on the back?

john4wd,

Yes that is a prancing horse. It's my Ferrari replica, which if I spent as much time on it as I have on this project it would be completed. Hahaha (or frown).
