Crackerhigher - 1987 Toyota Xtra Cab BuildUp -Thread

Hey everyone, names Daniel...I bought a 1987 Toyota Xtra Cab with the 22re engine back in October 2012. I have owned a few Toyota pickups over the years, also owned a 03 tacoma ext cab that had to close to 12" of lift on it and it ended up getting totaled back in 07. Ever since owning a extend cab toyota, I always wanted to get another one. The 84-88 toyota xtra cab trucks always seemed harder to find and I lucked up on this one. As it sits now, it has 5.29 gears in the front and and a v6 3rd in the rear with 4.10 gears. I think the previous own blew out the 3rd in the rear and replaced it with a stock gear...thats just a speculation though. For the lift, it has a stage II Pro Comp 4" lift with springs in the rear. The tires on it now are 38" TSL Swamper. Surprisingly they do not scrub.
Here are a few pics of when I first got it....

Okay its been quite a while since I updated this and I have some progress done to it. Hopefully I can stay on top of the updates on here.

As you can see in the pictures, the wheels were pretty oxidized so I got them all polished up... Took a few hours but it was worth it.

I was told by the owner that the front 3rd had 5.29 gears and I usually like to check and find out myself if they a truck is really geared. I bought a 78 chevy 4x4 once and was told it had 4.56 gears and turned out to be 3.73 gears.

I pulled the cover from the front 3rd and there was a locker in there. Not exactly sure what name brand but I think it may be a lockrite locker. Its definitely a lunchbox style. Then I rotated the ring gear and it did have 5.29 stamped on the ring gear.

Now onto the downside, the right flange that goes into passenger side front 3rd was wobbly...and I did some research to see if I could fix it without tearing the 3rd down and resetting up the gears.

I then put in some new seals on the sides of the 3rds...still leaked gear oil.

I found this link on zuks site

http://www.gearinstalls.com/needlebearing.htm

Unfortnately I was out of luck because the bushing I have is swirl style that is causing the leak on my front ifs 3rd.

Some time ago, I order some door hinges because my door was sagging really bad on the drivers side. I found these on ebay but sellers only carry the lower hinges for some reason. Then I used a Toyota hinge rebuild kit that I found at Napa for the upper. I didn't want to pay the $45 bucks the stealership wanted for just one upper hinge.

There was a noticeable difference between oem and aftermarket but it still fits like it was supposed to.

I ordered a performance accessories 3" body lift to add with the 4" suspension lift. I do stand corrected on the suspension lift. I found out it is a 4" pro comp stage 1 lift and not stage 2. I know some people are anti body lift but here in Florida everything is so flat so not much rock crawling here. The front torsion bars are maxed out and the front end is stiff. I measured around 2 inches of lift from the torsion bars. In the future, I'm gonna add some ball joint spacers and back down the torsions bars a bit to give it a better ride.

My vent window on the drivers side was busted out so I picked up one from ebay that came out of a 4runner.

My tailgate was missing the access cover panel and the hinges. I did find out that there is a difference in the 84-88 pickup hinges vs 84-89 4runner tailgate hinges. They won't interchange. Did I mention how hard these two parts are to find in my area?

My steering box was leaking fluid faster than a gigantic waterfall not to mention that the previous owner had fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid and not ATF that the factory manual calls for. So I lucked up and found a used steering box in good shape with rag joint and all.

The previous owner must have cut my emergency brake cable. I know its not a necessity but I like to have things in working order. I found a used emergency brake cable as well.

My climate control assembly was jacked up too and wouldn't function correctly so while tracking down more parts I got a hold of a working climate assembly with a cover plate.

Notice the broken parts on the assembly.

While I had the dash apart I took out the oem bulbs and added some blue ones to the cluster. Not too bright and I'm thinking of changing them out for some white led bulbs to brighten it up.
