Addicted Offroad's 1986 Pickup Build-Up (diesel swap) Thread
I guess you could say that is Not your normal, average everyday white guy build. This is my buddy Colt's truck. Needless to say, its going to be SICK. Its a slow moving build, but I will try to keep this updated throughout the rest of the build.
We're dropping a Cummins 4BT into this 86' xtra cab. Running D60 front and 14B rear.
I have done a few of these swaps, and this one is going to be the coolest one yet when its done.
Motor is from a Frito Lay van. Its bolted to a TH400/NP205. Basically we moved the cab back on the frame 5" to make room, and to get a better placement on the 800lb beast to keep it behind the front axle to allow it to climb better and keep the weight centered. It also allows us to have a 38" front driveshaft. We have played with the idea of a 203/205 doubler, but I honestly don't think its going to be needed with 400ft/lbs of torque out of the diesel. I recommended just running the 205 by itself with the Lowmax 3:1 gears. This setup has an adapter(that was too short) that will clock the 205 flat. So, we cut the center of the cab out and stuffed the entire drivetrain up to get a flat skid even with the frame rails.
Today we busted out the motor mounts, and mocked up a temporary crossmember to hold everything in place until I can build a more permanent skid. These motors require a 10 degree tilt to make sure the tranny pan is level, so that is why they sit in the engine bay cocked at 10*.
I finish welded the front spring mount into place, set the rear pinion angle and burned the perches into place. Next time out there, I will be building the front engine cage, working a dovetail front into the mix, and moving the turbo down with the 6BT manifold mount to clear the hood.

This is the adapter that needs to be lengthened for the 205. Basically the 32 spline adapter sleeve bottoms out before to sit flush. We put it in so we could at least mock everything up. This is what we need to iron out before I can build the crossmember and Tcase mount.

Have you tried talking with ORD (http://www.offroaddesign.com/index.htm) about that adapter? They may have some ideas, just a thought.

Now you know why I haven't gotten to the tire carrier. I also have a 93 4runner in the shop getting complete front and rear conversion. I have to finish it tomorrow so I can get back to getting bumpers built and shipped. My goal is to be caught up in the next two weeks so I can get my 4runner finished. Yes, I said FINISHED!
Detroit on both ends, steering box moved, and 30 spline Dirty 30s.
