rustED's 83' yota build thread

I ended up taking off the front sway bar yesterday, like I'd mentioned this is the first 83' out of the 3 I've owned that still had one on it. I drove it to work yesterday and it felt and handled good, couldn't really tell the difference. I also mounted the "hand-me-down" steering stabilizer that I took off my 85' parts truck. It made a big difference, I was getting some vibration thru the steering wheel after putting on the 33's (probably from uneven tire wear) anyway it feels a lot better after mounting the stabilizer.

Ha, Ha... yeah my dad had that home stereo speaker in there when I got the truck from him, I was going to take it out, but it doubles as a comfortable arm rest, lol...plus it has pretty decent sound and bass (it's Sony) lol. I'll eventually get some new 6x9's to fill the hole somebody already cut in the doors.

Need some advice, I'm having carb problems, I'm not to familiar with these carbs, other than the adjustment screws. I've always lucked out on my other yotas and had good carbs, lol. Anyway it's flooding, literally filling the bowl half full of fuel, any clues as to the cause? Does anyone make a good rebuild kit for these, or is it just better to go with a webber? Thanks in advance!

I messed with mine and tune it and tuned it. Played with the timing, desmoged it, never got it to run right. It was a reman unit as well. Same issues as yours.
I then broke down and bought a weber, much better. They also can be tricky to tune just right but it was night and day from my stocker.

Are you whoring me out again Josh?! LOL BTW, that tie rod you sold me installed perfectly! Very much pleased and thanks! (hijack over)
rustED, let me know if you need any help stripping that engine for the weber. I went from an Aisin to a Weber with a desmog before my rebuild and it was like night and day, Loved it!!

Thanks guys!... kawazx636, I just read through your 22r re-build thread and started reading your de-smog thread, awesome work! I'm sure I'll have some questions for ya!

Not much to update on the truck. I still haven't got a new carb for it yet, I think the float was stuck on the stock carb, I've messed around with it some, and have wheeled it closed to home, but it still has a tendency to flood out, and dies unexpectantly at times so I don't really trust it as a DD right now. Anyone have any experience running Holley carbs on their yotas? My uncle has one, (I'm assuming it's a Holley 350 cfm 2 barrel) that's currently on a 85' Toyota, he said he'd sell it to me along with the adapter plate pretty cheap. I figured I'd give it a try.

Post a pic of that carb and adapter if you get it and it fits
I have a brand new holley 2 barrel in the basement that fits a datsun or something....would like to see if they are similair.

Sure, not a problem. My Uncle is supposed to be coming up for a visit in a couple weeks and he said he'd bring that carb up with him, I'll post pics of it then.
Ice performance has them on their site, spendy buggers! http://www.lceperformance.com/Holley...-p/1031004.htm

My Uncle came by for a visit today, and brought me 2 Aisin carbs and one Holley 2 barrel carb (I think) with adapter plates. The holley he pulled off a 85' Toyota with a 22r that he was parting out. I was kinda assuming that it was a holley 350 cfm, probably like what LCE performance sells, but after looking on their site, it looks nothing like it. It doesn't say Holley anywhere on it and I can't find in serial # on it either, I figured I'd throw some pics up, maybe one of you guys might be able to identify what I have.

De-smog time!!!
Well I still haven't identified what make or model 2 barrel carb I have, and since I got it from my Uncle who pulled it off a Toyota he was parting out, I'm unsure if it ran good or not with it on. So after doing some good reading (mainly Pumkinyota's and kawazx636's de-smogging threads) I decided that de-smogging my engine would eliminate a lot of problems, and would be necessary anyway if I end up going with the 2 barrel carb. So my plan is to de-smog on the cheap (I will attempt to make my own block off plates). For now I'm going to try to stick with the Aisin carb and see if I can get it running with it, if not I'll throw on the 2 barrel and try that. There's no smog pump on the engine, so I'm assuming that someone already removed it, from what I can tell, the rest of the smog items are still intact.
Here's the links to Pumkinyota's & kawazx636's threads for anyone who's interested, they're very informative!

So upon closer inspection it looks like someone already removed the Reed/Pair valve (probably at the same time as the smog pump) so that saves me some work, also comparing to Pumkinyota's thread, I don't have VSV assembly either. I did however have to remove the air injection from the exhaust manifold. Here is a pic of it removed.
Then I cut and removed the flanges from the air injection tubes, and ground it down so I just had the flanges. Then I found a bolt the size of the hole that was left were the tube used to be and cut it down the same thickness as the flange and then plug welded the bolt into the hole plugging it. The gaskets were still good, so I just reassembled it. That's about all I got done tonight.
Tomorrow I'm going to work on removing the EGR and making a block off plate for it.

EGR Blockoff Plates
I got a little more done tonight. I got my EGR intake and EGR head block off plates made, I used 1/8" steel plate. I got them primed and painted with VHT(Very High Temperature) silver paint, after letting them air dry I cooked them in the oven at 200* for 1 hour according to the instructions.

^^^got rid of some more vacuum lines I don't need, still need to pull the charcoal canisters off.
here's the 2 piece spacer/adapter plate. I'd already have the carb bolted on, except that 2 of the short allen bolts are standard coarse thread, I need metric, so i'll either try to find some metric bolts or tap and rethread the holes to work with the bolts I have. I have a spare intake manifold, so I'm not to worried about re-threading the holes.
