Rebel Marine's 1980 Project

Here is my 1980...

I have been at it for a number of months now. My first concern was the bad idle, and its failing emissions.... When I got it, it ran, but as it turned out, just barely. A complete tune up, replacing the missing catalytic converter, a re-securing the massively loose exhaust manifold got it through emissions testing.

Word from the State Capital says that they will be adding a visual inspection of other components next year, so now I have to find the upper smog pump bracket, the pump, bolts, hoses etc, to get that part of the system back online.

(more text after photo)

More immediate than the smog pump is getting that wretched old worn out Weber carb replaced. I want to take it back to original. But the guy I bought it from though, has lopped off end of cable, and brackets and throttle actuator assembly is completely gone.... I have to find these before I can replace the carb, and this too is providing some difficulty....

I keep running into the weirdest things and find myself having to address those. I had not previously noticed one of the place where it had been rigged, until driving down the road today, in a driving rain storm...when the truck died. I pretty quickly found the problem, though not quickly enough to avoid being drenched. The problem is that when he, or someone, had installed the igniter, they cut off the one end of the cable to the distributor...and replaced the green plug with push in spade connectors... which had popped out. LOL Which puts me into the market for two coil w/igniter modules rather than the one spare I wanted to have.

The engine itself has a little blow by, but I think it will last till next fall. After these three mechanical issues, and replacing the high beam switch, I will be arresting the little bit of surface rust, but slamming into the interior. A full exterior restoration will come starting next Spring.

Here is where I am, and what keeps this old guy occupied...

Todays project was installing the missing parking brake cable, and new turn signal lenses. The parking brake cable wasn't exactly missing. What it was, was that someone before be had **cut** the front cable off at both ends. There are several different cables that were used on a 1980 YoYo. I know this because I have some of them hanging up on the wall in the barn! LOL This truck uses a long wheel base front cable... check. Thank goodness for Ebay.

Good looking truck, Devil Dog......There are 2 places fairly close to you that have several 1st Gens.. One is on 11 north of you, can't remember what town, tho...I saw it on a round up a few years ago and haven't made it back..The other is in Crossville, he has several old Toyotas....

I live about 65 miles N.W. of Chattanooga, in Roane County...Let me know if I can help..

Nice Toyota. Had an 82 here that looked a lot like yours and it was a 2 year project.

Good luck.

Truck looks good! Like the flatbed also. I am east of Memphis, TN in a small town. I go to the scrap yards frequently but finding a 1st gen is really hard. Plenty of second gens that we can use some parts off of though. The pull a part in Nashville tends to have Toyotas a lot.

Thank you gentlemen, for the input and the suggestions on where to find parts. I also found out that there is a guy in Pikeville with some first gen trucks laying about. I need to find out the names and numbers of these three places, and take a day off to wander bone yards. I actually look very forward to that. As for this truck, most of the problems with it is where things were chopped out, or rigged poorly. I think though, that overcoming these challenges is part of what is making this to be so fulfilling an adventure. I mean, if I could just got to YearOne and order everything, then it would just be a matter of pouring in money, rather than pouring myself into it.

I scope out eBay every week for trucks and fsm's and I noticed a few stock carbs on their today. Might look into one of those for your rig.
