transmission swap?
Had a bit of bad luck with my automatic transmission after the swap (its a boat anchor now) so I was thinking about converting to a manual 5 speed. Heres the thing already had a driveshaft built for it as an auto (another boat anchor), and I dont have the clutch pedal inside the cab. I assume its just a matter of adding a bracket from a manual vehicle and installing it. Which transmission am I looking for and what transfer case as well. My donor engine is a 2002 which was an auto and is the manual tranny going to mount up to the auto motor. and finally will I be able to use the auto ecu with the new manual transmission or do I need a manual ecu? Any help appreciated, thanks in advance. Ed

01 and 02 were unique, they were drive by wire with an electronically controlled transmission (the kickdown included) and the throttlebody has no bracket for the kickdown for an different a340f. I talked to a very informative tranny guy (no pun intended) he said that the electronically controlled transmission was looking for a signal from a speed sensor on my differential (abs, trc, vsc), since my truck never had any of those things I dont have this sensor, nor do I have the computer that receives the signal and passes it to my ecu. he said that more than likely that was the demise of the transmission. My reverse was slipping the day I first drove it and he said that reverse was not electronically controlled in any way, so it probably had issues. So my dilemma to buy another automatic from an 01 or 02 and possibly change the differential for one with a sensor, adding the vsc computer and connecting it to the ecu, or find a 5 speed and add the clutch pedal in the cab. and stub off the signals for the electronically controlled transmission from the ecu

I'm interested to see where this goes. I've got an '04 Tacoma prerunner model with the 3.4L and OE auto that I want to swap to a manual. The catch for me is it's 2WD which is RARE to find a manual transmission for. I'm actually considering swapping in a 2WD out of an older 2wd pickup like what came in my '89 with the 3.0 in it. I wish it was 4WD just for easy of transmission sourcing. I'm also half way tempted to just put a 4WD setup in it with the transfercase and just not worry about any of the front driveline components.
Oh, I just noticed you're in Vegas as well... If somehow you stumble on a 2WD manual transmission locally in your search for a reasonable price I'd buy you some beers or get you a finders fee or something!!! LOL

Swapping to a 5spd. is no big deal. You will need either a 5spd. from behind a 3.0 or from behind a 3.4. Either one can be used, however, the one from behind a 3.0 is the easier and less expensive way to go. It already has the passenger side drop on the transfer case. If you go with the 5spd. from behind the 3.4 ('96' and up) you will have to replace the transfer case with an early 4 cyl. gear driven case which requires an adapter kit (apprx. $400+ if I remember correctly). Unless you can find a '95' T100 with the 3.4/5spd. combination to get your donor transmission from - these had the passenger side drop transfer case needed.
As far as using the auto ECM, this can be done without much trouble, however, you will always have a code stored and your check engine light will stay on. I did my first swap this way and simply removed tne bulb in the dash.

I already have the gear driven transfer case with the 23 spline output gear installed behind the old automatic....probably need to buy a new adapter to mount it to the manual tranny, I'm sure I will have to install the clutch pedal and applicable hardware, slave cylinder, slave reservoir, and applicable lines for slave. Oh and I still need all of these things, if anyone has items for sale! Thinking the 5vze 5 speed with adapter so I wont have to mess with throwout bearing, clutch, pressure plate compatibility issues! wondering if the adapter I bought for putting it behind the automatic will still work for putting it behind the manual?
