Catalytic converter question
#21
Entirely legal. My wife's parents own a condo in June Lake and that is my trucks registration address. Mono county is in the Change of Ownership smog program, meaning no smog check unless selling the vehicle. They will be selling the condo in a couple years, so when registration is due then I'll change the address back after getting the renewal notice and still get a couple more years.
No PO boxes allowed, and it must be a legitimate address, so the DMV must check it somehow.
If I was going to do an SAS, I'd just run the stock 3.4 cross-over and cat. All you'd need is to run a driver side drop front axle and transfercase. To keep a gear driven case either get the Inchworm lefty (expensive) or the lefty adapter and use the gear driven case you already have. You'd never have to worry about being legal with this setup.

You're going to need to talk to the ref about your cat. The list contains at least one typo/wrong entry (your cat) and possibly others.
Go to Catco's California catalytic converter catalog and search that part number.
I'm going to stick with my LT suspension plans. I've been exempt from smog checks since I got my sticker and can get another four years, so I wont worry about cats.

Thanks for all the help.

Okay. New development. I called CARB directly. Here is what I found out.... Walker makes a CAT for the 97 4runner that is CARB approved, part #81712, EO# D-182-47. It is approved for engine group #VTY3.42JG2GK which is the 3.4 motor. Now here is my new question....Does anyone know of a way to tell using the VIN or engine number if my motor falls into that engine group. I looked up a bunch of stuff and found that there are (4) 3.4 engine group numbers in that year.
Toyota dealer has no flippen clue about the engine family number.

street legal
i am in Livermore, CA. I can get a street legal cat (guaranteed or double your money back!) for the chap with the 1996. However, DWEINBERG01, my supplier shows nothing for the 1997? shows 96, 98, 99, but not 97? how does the ref know your engine is 97? is he checking your ECU number?

Cjsgarage, yes he is checking it against the ecu number. Thanks for the offer to grab me a cat, but believe it or not pep boys is a dealer. I just grabbed one from them.

I looked through all of my paperwork from my three BAR inspections (emissions, inspection, etc...) and there isn't anything about the the engine group number on them. I wonder if thats anything the ref will even check. I find references to engine group numbers on many websites, but nothing on how to check against specific vehicles.
