Are the 5VZFE and 3VZE Crankshaft Interchangeable?

Are the 5VZFE and 3VZE Crankshaft Interchangeable?

Just Wondering. Googled it and didn't find anything. I heard that some 5VZ engines have a crank that does not accept a pilot bearing for a manual trans. So I thought maybe that could be fixed by swapping in a 3VZ crank. Everybody's got a few of those layin' around, right

Look up the part number for the 3VZ crank and compare it to the 5VZ crank (I actually don't know the answer, but that link will give you your answer...or go talk to a Toyota Parts dealer). While you're at it, compare the part number of a crank from an A/T and M/T 5VZ for a 2000 4Runner.

There's a thread floating around somewhere (not sure if it's here or on Pirate, I think Pirate though) that the guys at ORS said they only saw 1 crank, EVER, that wasn't machined for a pilot bearing, and that crank was either an aftermarket, replacement part, or came out of a 3VZ-FE (which was only available in Camrys with A/Ts).

Good points SacRunner! I found a couple of vendors on eBay, FWIW, that sell the same crank for all 3VZE and 5VZFE applications.

That crank mumbo jumbo is false. THey have the provisions for the pilot bearing. The auto's have a nub on the torque converter that fit into that provision.

Interchangeable? That would be nice. If you owned a 3VZ-E and wanted to upgrade to a forged steel crank. But it would be woefully neglectful for a 5VZ-FE owner to swap the forged steel crank in it with a cast iron crank from a 3VZ-E. And it's quite a bit less likely the forged steel crank from a 3VZ-FE would be interchangeable with either a 3VZ-E or 5VZ-FE(see quotes below).

Crankshafts

The 3.0L uses a cast iron crankshaft that stayed the same for all years. There are steel 3.0L cranks that you may run across, but these are out of the twin-cam 3.0L car. Journal sizes are the same as the truck SOHC motor; the difference is the snout length of 2.75" for the truck and 2.50" for the car.

5VZ-FE – 3.4L DOHC V6

For 1995 on the T100, more power came from an increase in the bore size of the VZ V6. It was increased to 93.5mm, and had four valves per cylinder and twin cams per cylinder head. Now displacing 3.4 liters this motor put out 190 hp at 4800, and 220 ft. lbs. of torque at 3600 rpm.

This motor also became available on the ’95 Tacoma and the ’96 4-Runner. Even though it shared the same basic design as the other VZ V6s, it didn’t have many parts in common. Parts it did share with other VZs consisted of main bearings, thrust washers and freeze plugs.

The Toyota VZ engine family is a series of V6 gasoline piston engines ranging from 2.0L to 3.4L in displacement and both SOHC and DOHC configurations. The family introduced many changes for Toyota, including various EFI, ECU, and engine improvements from generation to generation. The VZ was Toyota's response to the Nissan VG engine. The low angle DOHC cylinder heads were designed by Yamaha Motor Company, and excelled in low-mid torque and power, making the VZ well-suited for various uses in cars, trucks, and SUVs.

The blocks are all strongly made using cast iron with large interconnected main bearing cradles and two bolt main bearing caps. Forged steel crankshafts, and cast iron main bearing support girdles became standard with the 3VZ-FE. Piston and ring construction are typical parts, with rods varying between large and very large for stock V6 production engines.

Thanks to everyone for all the good info. vital22re sealed the deal for me by dispelling the idea that 5VZs are out there with no provision for a pilot bearing.
Glad to know too that the 5VZ has a forged crank and Yamaha designed heads.

5VZFE Crank IS CAST!

I know this is an old thread but the information may be of current value - so I am tossing in my 2 cents. The 3ZFE from the auto trans Camry is a BETTER crank, (forged, chamfered oil holes, smoother machining) and it IS a drop in replacement for the 5VZFE!

I have a 1998 T-100 that just had the crank break into pieces, (very freak) at 177K miles - and I can post photos to prove that it was cast.

But instead - Go to custom tacos forum and there is an excellent post with pics showing the two shafts, side-by-side, and the guy authoring the post is running the forged crank from a 3VZFE plucked out of an ES300 in his 5VZFE (drop in).
