Question Bouncy speedo needle

My speedo needle is bouncy up until I reach about 25mph (2500rpms). I did a search and found the "2nd gen speedo quit" thread. Cebby's problem the first time sounds like what mine is doing. Does a 1st gen have a speed sensor and, if so, where on the tranny is it? If it doesn't have a sensor, I'm figuring I may have to replace the speedo gear in the transfer case. Is this a PITA or is it relatively easy?
My truck's a 5 speed, BTW.
Thanks!

I know in my '95 I had to get it replaced, but for some reason its starting to do it again...may need to be greased.

Yes, you have a speed sensor - may not be hooked up if you don't have cruise control. The speedo is most likely shaft driven & either the male end of the shaft or the female end of the speedo is wearing out. I say live with it until it breaks, that's what I'm doing.

It could be your speed cable. Here's a thread on how to change it out:

Thanks for the info. No, I don't have cruise control so I'll get under the truck and see if I see anything hanging around. Thanks for the thread link, Troy65.

All kinds of little things are starting to go wrong and I guess they're just bugging me. The windshield trim is popping off, the back window has stopped going up and down by itself and the track is rusted and almost gone, paint is starting to flake off the replacement fender on the passenger side. It could be worse, I suppose.

I know what you mean. I've been dealing with a clicking/popping clutch master and other little noises. By the time I'm done, I'll have an old truck with a lot of new parts.
