Just figured i'd get this started... I went and picked up a 1989 fj62 axle last night. Got a killer deal on it, and its 100% complete and functional! so we'll see how this goes let the part gathering begin!

Here's the axle.








Im basically gonna build up the axle slow and steady. It obviously needs a rebuild, new brakes, and what not. So that'll probably be the first thing it gets. I plan on doing the Marlin Crawler rebuild kit, with new rotors/pads, brake plate eliminator, gonna toss some hi steer on it and possibly 6 shooter knuckles, and get some armor welded up on it and it'll be good to go! Im going to be sticking with the stock birfs, they seem to be in good condition ( i haven't torn into them yet ) but Im only going with 35s and a 3" TG kit so it should be no problem.

I hope it isn't too high :/ lol with a winch, front bumper, and the heavy v6. it should be pretty low.

As money permits, this will update. The 4Runner isn't really daily driven since the girlfriend's car gets 37-40 mpg and the work tacoma gets 30. 13.75 isn't really cutting it anymore, and its only going to get worse with a lift, and 35s.

Gonna need new gears for it too. Those 9.5" axles only came with 4.11s from the factory. So add those to your list, and another ~$450 to your build budget expectations....

yeah I know. Im kinda discussing it both on my build thread and on here... i'll definitely be going with 5.29s. but I have a Powdercoated budbuilt skid plate, IFS brace, and front/rear locked 4.88 differentials to offset the cost a little.

Oh em gee... an update? lol

Started digging into the axle today. got the entire driver side torn down, gonna do the passenger side tomorrow. Was pretty messy, but everything is in great condition. no play in the spindle, everything was heavily greased, no pitting or rusting. and all the threads seem to be in great condition. Win win Im excited to tear down the other side to check the play in the spindle and then ill be ordering everything from marlin for the front axle. here's the damage:

Manual hub, really good condition, original paint on it. The only con is that it has 3 aftermarket bolts ( not the 7 bolts ) but they fit regardless. ill be replacing them with factory ones

The white shoes are from sophomore year of highschool haha. so they're beat from years of usage, i dont really give a crap about them.

and actually, i use the crap out of those things! I just dont use them to whipe things off my hands and such. if they get oily they get oily, but i use them for work and fiddling with my truck.

also, I didn't get to the passenger side. Girlfriend came over and distracted me and its my mom's birthday party today. So it might not be messed with till monday.

Got the entire axle torn apart now. the passenger side wasn't nearly as grimey as the other. and after doing it once, its a cake the next. In comparison to a CV joint. I'd rather tear down and put 5 axles together than have to change out another CV joint! lmao I actually enjoyed disassembling it.

Anywho, here's some more pictures of it torn down. I didn't get as extravagant as the other side, we all know what it looks like lol
