I live in San Jose and want to go wheeling...

hi, i live in san jose, CA and would love to go wheeling. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good place nearby, maybe i can meet up with some people that are going sometime. I drive an 86 4runner that is totally stock with 31s, so it would have to be somewhere that i can do. thanks,-aaron

I was about to post and then saw your post. Lets see if anybody is interested in meeting at Hollister Hills 28 or 29 Feb (day trip). I've been there a couple of times and it is great as it has easy and difficult trails to go on. Also a small obstacle course. It's about 1 hour from SOuth San Jose.

I have a totally stock 03 4Runner.

It should be fun after this rain season.

The stairsteps are fun, and not always this easy to get up.

Once the snow thaws, my club will start to do the trails in the sierras again. We'll be opening up our adopt-a-trail which is a fun one for stock trucks. A newbie run to hollister will also be scheduled.

I like to go with the Xterra guys a lot because they're not as hardcore as my club and they usually do trails that are more friendly to mildly modded trucks. I'll post about these runs as they are scheduled.

In the mean time, the only place close is hollister and pismo (pismo is 3 hours south). Big Kahuna will probably want to go with you guys too.

Well, last year it was in march, but I don't think it has been scheduled for this year, yet.

I suggest the following:
28th Feb looks good on the California State Parks site, I will call them to validate no events or blocks.

Day trip for newbie/less experienced drivers (like myself ) with mostly standard rigs. More experienced drivers/better rigs welcome to show/teach, but the rest wont do the tuff stuff. I still owe the bank some money on my 4Runner so cant mess it up yet

Let me know who is interested for the 28th, starting around 10am.

Great seems we have Scottiac and Lev Zepplin, and myself bulldog-yota already.

Lets do 9:45 am to 10:15 am meet at the ranger station (lower ranch) where you pay entrance fee, we can go from there to the upper ranch.

I will confirm it's OK with the state park, let yu guys know later this week.

Pack lunch, etc.

I have recovry straps, tow straps, etc. I dont have a highlift jack or lots of tools, bring if you have. But lets not break something

I currently dont have a radio, whats the best these days (I want something portable from one vechile to the next)?

I'll have my cb installed by then, but in the meantime, FRS radios oughtta work for our purposes. I've got a pair of them, and could probably borrow another couple from some friends.

(FRS are the little cobra or motorola handhelds that every skiier on the planet seems to have these days! )

(oh man is this going to be an early morning! )

Scottiac,

I am planning to get a couple of handheld CB's this week. Cobra seems to be the best these days.

If you can bring some FRS handsets it would be great. Forgive my ignorance but does FRS channels overlap with CB channels at all??

I you guys want to start a little later we can move the time, let me know when you want to start. SO you can get some more

Thumbs up It's a go!! Anybody else want to join??

Phoned Hollister. Its a go for the 28th!

Area 5 seems to have a Hummer event, but the rest of the upper ranch will be open for us.

We can finalize arrangements during this week.

SO far it seems we will only 3 vechiles, please send out for other people who want to join a stock/relative new driver run. There is plenty to do and teach for the more experienced guys as well.

re: frs/cb, nope, no overlap whatsoever...

10:00am-ish should be fine.

I don't know the area at all, is there a place to air back up near there? I don't have a compressor yet. (Mike? where's my compressor?!? )

There is a place to air up right at hollister, you'll see it when you pull in to pay your admission fee.

Cool, we now have 4 trucks going!

I dont have a CB yet, got a couple of FRS/GMRS radio's at Fry's today. So maybe we can just use those for the 28th, channel 4 on those should be OK. We should have a couple radios(4 and counting) for the trip, as I think Scottiac will also bring a few.

Lets finalize towards this weekend.

Leo,

Just curious, what area are you planning on taking the Subaru crowd? I don't recall of a good flat area for them to play in? Either way, it should be fun see them.
