Search & Rescue FJ
New to the forum. Cuddos to Cory.... great work here and cool Fj.
I've owned an FJ for 7 months now. Right form the showroom floor came a three inch lift, more aggressive 285's and a TRD fart can. I have taken this out on several search calls and it has done pretty well. Some things concern me though.
I see alot of lift/tire mods and hear nothing about gear changes. I live at 6200' altitude, frequently going to 8000+, and just going to 285's has sucked down some power. Then add in winds that are always blowing. I'm looking at 33's but think that should include some gearing$$$ I wish there would have been a V-8 option or a more pumped V-6.
And what's up with all the rigs with hi-lift jacks on the roof and stock bumper and no rub rails on the sides? These people haven't needed to use it yet. No where to jack without screwing something up.
The VSC is crappola. Made for those who don't know how to drive. It's a real pain up here in the winter time (which lasts 6 months) Really sux when all you need is a litte speed to make it through a bad section and it shuts you down.............will be hacking that
Lets talk about dome lights -or- lack of. I should light candles so I could see the topo's and get a compass/gps bearing. The little top light don't cut it up front. Anybody come up with a mod for that?
Fuel ecomony? whatever. They should have put a larger tank in it. At 14-15 MPG. it dosen't have a very good range. I've had to add fuel a couple times, to make it back to town. Man-a Fre is making a tank for them. Though the milage is secondary as I also drive a 3/4 ton, V-10 Dodge. (that gets 12 to 13 MPG)...........Who's those guys that are getting 20 MPG There are two things a man will lie about and gas milage is one of them.
Overall, I really like the rig. It's been in the rocks, dunes, mud, and some plain ugly winter terrain. (that's just going to work : ) I average 2700 miles off road, on an annual basis, just going on searches. I think this will serve me well in the future. I've owned several Toy truck and all have done well. It just needs some bolt ons added, but then, not many of us leave things alone.
I hope I have not stepped on anyone's emotions. Since I'm new, I don't want to start off stomping a mud hole. Be safe and tell someone where your going......................Thanks

Ozzie, Thanks. I'm getting 15 MPG all around. I think the altitude and wind are just zapping me. Mud is a valid paint job. Now two are the same.

Welcome, and as far as the dome light goes, alot of the 3rd gen guys are led crazy and have put them in their dome lights and they are crazy bright, may check into that.

I know what you mean about seeing the Hi-Lift jacks on rigs with no way to use it.
There are a few who have added new lights to the headliner, and it adds much more light.
On the MPG, I was first getting close to 20 and above with the rig city/highway.
Add in a more aggressive tire, and it dropped to 19.
Add in the 2.5" OME lift, ARB bumper, and winch, and it dropped a little more, then came back to 18 to 19 again.
Add in the same type of aggressive tires only sized at 285x70x17, and it went down to around 17 city/highway.
Right now with winter blend gas I am getting between 16 and 17 city/highway.
I am perfectly happy with that, as I was only getting 13 MPG in the '91 4Runner, and this rig has so much more power than the old one.
It is mainly my tires that is lowering the MPG, the aggressive tread.
But I sure like the howl they emit, and not to mention the great traction.
There is another member on the board here and over at fjcruiserforums.com by the name of KD7NAC-07FJ that is on SAR.
Check out his mods, many of them are a benefit to SAR.
