T100 zuk mod!
So, behind a avid Toyota fan and Toyota technician, I've seen a lot of people, both through this site and the dealership, that have done the famous Zuk mod for the rear springs with the older pickups and 4runners. I've always wanted to try this, but worried that since the T100 is larger and heavier, I figured the standard 100-125 lb coils that are used on the pickups wouldn't be heavy enough.
I started looking around for a larger coil that would fit around the stock rear bumpstop contact point, as opposed to cutting it and fitting it inside like on the pickup zuk mod. I found that the front coils off of a 97-06 TJ J**p wrangler fit, but were about 3-4 inches too long to fit, even with my truck being lifted 2 inches.
After a little trial and error, I was able to fit them by trimming them down to 14 inches long. Even at this length, I had to use a bottle jack and disconnect the rear shocks to get the spring in with a pry bar.
I have found one issue with my set up. When doing the cutting to fit the springs, I cut the small diameter end off the spring. Due to my all-pro u-bolt flip, the spring doesn't fir perfectly on the leaf spring, and there is a small amount of noise. I may try to get another set of springs and do version 1.2. The mounting issues are shown in the second and third photos. In the last photo, you can see the final product. Note that there are the Tacoma 17 inch wheels in the bed with mounts 265/70R17s on them, so I'm guessing about 200-250 lbs that's not normally back there. So far, it rides great, and empty, sits about 1-1.5 inches taller.
Of course, after I did this, I found that DJ99 had done his zuk mod on his regular cab '93 T100 using the exact same springs, just cut to 12 inches instead of 14 inches like mine. Here's a link to the original zuk mod write up page.
