Power loss at 2700 RPM (3.4 L)

I recently purchased a 1996 T100. It has about 125,000 miles on it and I only paid $800. I have absolutely no history on it, no maintenance records, or anything of the sort. Everything seems to be in decent working order. However, there is a loss of power that occurs at about 2750 RPM. I changed the fuel filter in the hippuric power in general but the problem persists. I put new PCV valve in too but that had no result. I have pulled one of the spark plugs and it looks pretty good. I don't know where to start really. Should I pull the fuel pump and make sure the screen is clean? What about injectors?

What do you mean when you say power loss? That motor doesnt really get up and go until you get it above 3100.

I mean literally, when the motor hits 2750 rpm it almost cuts off completely. If I back off the throttle it's fine but when I put a load on it at that rpm or higher is sputters violently.

Xtra cab or regular cab? Auto or manual trans? 2WD or 4WD? Where about in Houston are you?

Check the fuel pressure...could be the fuel pump.

Pull the timing belt cover and check the timing marks. Might be time to do the timing belt.

Is the check engine light on?
