Parking lights come on with the ACC on
Dunno why my parking lights come on and stay on until the key is in the off position. Just replaced the light switch on the column, replaced the rheostat (mine is the digital). The wiper switch is digital too. The fuse is good the relay switch checked out normal with the ohmn meter. Where is the illumination control at? Could this be the cause? Anybody have any input for me? This has been going on for about 8 months.

Yes, its an '87 Runner. It's been so long ago I had just bought it and used it for hunting on the weekends. It wasn't until 5 or 6 months after I bought until someone ask why my lights were on. I just recently tore into it to try to find the problem. It's not draining the battering I just want to turn them off. Where can I start?

Ok so here are my thoughts on this. the most commonly made mistake that cause this problem is at the radio. If you have a aftermarket radio and used an adapter harness there will be a red (ACC) and an orange (illumination). Sometimes these wires get put together when installing it, causing the illumination to get power with the switch on. you can check this behind your radio or just simply turn on your parking lights with the key off and see if your radio turns on. Let me know if this does it if not so we can move onto the next test thanks

Yep, damn, that's it, sweet! Thank you sir. And here comes the but, now the lights on the dash aren't dimming. Right now the orange wire isn't connect to anything. Should it be?

Cool no problem. now was it a solid orange wire or orange/white or orange/black? better yet what wire was attached to the other side of the orange you disconnected? through the plug on the factory side of the harness. was it a solid green or white/green? did the dimmer work before you disconnected the wire? or before you were having any problems at all?

The orange and red were connected together from the aftermarket plug. The aftermarket orange wire was connected to a solid green on the factory plug. Let me guess, connect the orange to the green and that will give me my dimmer back. I remeber the rheostat having this same green wire. How am I doing so far. Did I figure it out? Is that what u were going to tell me to do? Or do I need to try something else? So far your batting 1000%.

The orange wire is simply an "ON/OFF" input signal --> aftermarket radio for its dimmer. It does NOT have a variable dimming feature like a factory radio. How it works is, it gets a 12V signal to the radio when the parking lights are on and dims the radio just a little bit, vise versa when you turn off the lights.
The factory radio has 2 wires for its dimming feature, the 12 volt green that comes on and a white/green variable ground that is controlled via the dimmer switch. Ok ill try and make it simple as i can to test. what kind of tester are you using a meter or a simple light tester with a bulb? Id have to say for this test a simple light bulb tester type may be easier.

Ok attach one end of the tester to the green wire, and the other on the white/green. Turn on the lights to the parking light position and adjust the dimmer knob. pay attention to the light> let me know what it reads. The dash lights are working right? just no dimmer?

I got it to work. I believe there was a loose wire ( green one). As soon as I giggled it around the dash lights dimmed as they should. The radio itself has a dimmer switch on it. It's either a little dimm or bright. Thanks again for all your in site. Who knew the radio wires would keep your parking lights on if wired incorrectly.
