theoretically you can make more hp with the lowest octane....(lower the octain, the faster the fuel burns) but increases the risk of failure.

87 before S/C without any problems. I think it ran best on 87, thats what Toyota recommends anyway....

No, he means 98 octane (unleaded too!!!).
....it is crazy over there, they basically sell race gas at all the pumps (you can't get low octane gas, period).

I'm going to try this. I just got my 4runner, it has 14000 miles on it. I've kept track 3 times now. 1st was 20mpg, 2nd was around 18mpg and this last one today was 19.9mpg. So if this is true, I should see 21-22. I run 87octane from wal-mart... paid $2.06gal today

Thats my log to date, I think some of the numbers have been affected by pretty big changes in temperature. I don't even know if you can even read it like it is, but I couldn't upload a Excel file.

Edit: I just showed the Grade and the subsequent mileage. These figures compensate for change in tire size and are about as accurate as can be.

87 octane, mostly Costco gas. No cheap stuff like Arco, Thrifty, etc., etc.

I put the occasional "Lubro Moly" Ventil Sauber(valve clean), "Lubro Moly" Jectron(fuel injector cleaner), Or Chevron fuel injector cleaner every 2-3 gas tank full.

cheapest stuff i can find. just because it's a toyota doesn't mean it needs special gas. my chevy work truck, on the other hand knocks like a snare drum if you mash the gas unless we run 93 in it...then again, it's got a high dollar stroker engine in it...

87, the higher grades are just a waste of money unless your motor uses it specifically, supercharger, or other high performance goodies. I look for the most inexpensive 87 octane I can find.

User manual says 87, but since I am high elevation (Colorado > 1 mi. high) 85 is just fine, and no advantage whatsoever going to 87.
