I change my syn every 9-10k miles which amounts to once a year and the total cost to me since I do it myself is under $30 and there is a reason or 10 why syn is much better than dino when the tough gets going especially in extreme cold or hot temps.
I think with synthetic it's more about how much time the oil spends in your motor than miles and since I only put about 11k a year on my truck I figure a year on the oil is enough for me since if I waited til 25k it would take over 2 years fro me to hit and IMO that's a bit too long on the same oil.
Now if I racked up 20k a year I could see going a ways longer on the synthetic before a change.

Also try the pour test if you are in extreme cold wether. Dino oil starts to get thick at a bit under 0 degrees F while syn pours like it's 40 degrees warmer;I tested this myself.
