Anyone know what causes the rod caps to get this groove in them? At least 2 of the rods ends has these grooves.
Also I took a ring that was still on one of the pistons it was the second ring down and it seemed loose in the ring channels when on the piston anyway, I pulled it off then I pulled the opening apart and it snapped pretty easy. Are these supposed to be this brittle? Here is a picture. To clarify all the top rings on all the pistons are what wee broken upon disassembly. I am thinking they broke from sitting long or hitting the ridge or combination if both but I'm no expert.

So I think I am going to use the same pistons just replace the bearings, rings and connecting rods. Is there anything I should know about these damaged connecting rods? Or getting new ones? If they are remanufactured will they need different connecting bearings? Also where is a good place to get rods? Man this is frustrating trying to figure out what I need. I want to do it cheap and quick. Hopefully get me through the winter and then try to get this 3rz in when I get dry weather and rest of the parts needed. But I need this 22r running for winter wheeling.

"Grooves" in the bearings caps are suppose to be there.... they are for proper cap alignment and installation.
Most piston rings are made of "plated" cast iron which is very hard however very brittle.
There are some piston rings made from steel and or steel/iron plated in chrome.
