New Toyota Turbo Diesel v8 family, In a Land Cruiser

Rediculously low weight for a diesel. Looks like finally someone is putting technology in one instead of simply relying on shear mass to hold one together! Powerband looks amazingly long. A very wide differance (for a diesel) in peak torque, and horsepower figures.
I speculate this is the first seeings of what happened when Toyota bought alot of GM's stake in Isuzu. I *really* want to see what happens when Yamaha get's to run wild with the valvetrain & head design. lmao. 10 years from now we'll have a diesel engine with vvtl-i & intake manifold runner/pleumn trickery lmao!
Anyways... GM might wind up kicking themselves in the ass bigtime down the road from ditching Isuzu stock... btw, for anyone that doesn't know. GM's 300,000 engine/year Duramaxx line = 100% Isuzu...

Very nice, 4.5L+ low weight sounds like it would be a good match for the Taco.
I'd think there would be a waiting list a several miles long if that happened and I'd be on it.

430Nm = 317ft-lbs
Common, that's nothing for a diesel. It's going to be cool to see what some of the diesel companies could do with this platform.

It also has a very long powerband, and keep in mind something else. The diesel's you're use to seeing put out 200bhp <cough duramax> are on the order of >7L of displacement. Not 4.5L.
This 1vd is a full 3.0L v6 away from the displacement range of engines in that horsepower rating.

It would be awesome if Toyota would bring a diesel to the US for its SUV's. I have my parents seriously considering a Mercedes GL turbo-diesel, they're the only ones in that market right now.
Car diesels are typically much lighter than heavy duty diesels. It has little to do with efficient design or high technology and everything to do with making a passenger car engine rather than an industrial engine. But if it weighs as much as a big block Chevy, that's far from light. Nothing like the european diesels.
GM got what they wanted out of Isuzu, which was the Duramax design. I have a feeling they'll be alright from here on out with their diesel program Actually variable valve timing has shown very small gains on diesel engines, so I don't think anyone is going to be seriously pursuing it for now. And I'm not sure what a variable length intake runner would gain on a diesel... They aren't throttled like a gas engine and you don't need air velocity to keep the fuel suspended in the air since it's injected directly into the chamber.
Edited to add: Mercedes 3.0 diesel in the GL320 puts out 215 horse at 3800 RPM and peak torque is 398 ft-lbs starting at 1400 RPM. This Toyota engine has a long way to come.

Yes compaired to domestic diesels it's power to size seems right on the money. But I don't want to compair a yota motor to a domestic motor, I want to see it to it's potential.
I'm sure that it won't take long for someone to stick a bigger turbo, bigger exhasut and screw with the computer. I bet we'll see it match the stock 6.7L Cummins before long(360hp, 650ft-lbs I do believe). Those kind of numbers out a 4.5L a cream in pants material.

um no, the 4 generations of duramax, all of which are 6.6L are:
The LMM durmax generates 365hp/660tq
The LBZ duramax generates 350hp/650tq
The LLY duramax generated 310hp/605tq
The LB7 duramax generates 300hp/520tq
Add an extreme chip, exhaust, intake and some tranny work and you have a diesel that will put down 550-650hp/1000-1300tq. and will run the 1/4 well under 13 seconds if not in the 12s.
Hell our 6.0L powerjoke generates 325hp/570tq, and
the new 6.4L twin turbo powerjoke has 350hp/650tq and is a LOT more peppy.
