From what I have heard, this is fairly common. The driver's half of my 60/40 bench seat is torn on the outside (both the cloth and vinyl). I was wondering if there is any way this can be repaired, outside of replacing it altogether or putting a cover over it. I was thinking of getting some time of stick-on patch to put over the vinyl part at least...I care more about the vinyl than the cloth.

I choose the fix. Completely reworked seat with backing, fabric, vinyl, and labor for...$250.

My question was about particular/specific materials to use, as well as procedures for using those said materials to "band-aid" the seat.

BUMP anybody know of the best/easiest way to "repair" this tear in the vinyl? The cloth part doesn't bother me as much...but the vinyl seems like it has already been spreading little by little

I've band-aided the same issue by getting some similarly colored materials, cut a thin strip to over lap each side of the tear. I then sewed the two sides together, careful not to completely pull through the vinyl. (that's why I tripled the thickness). I used some thick thread and curved needles.

I snugged that up pretty good. At this point, it looks kinda like Frankenstein's head, but it's held up for quite some time. I left it at that, because I don't really care what it looks like right now, but it could easily look better by cutting a piece of similar size and color, spray some adhesive on it and lay it over the scar.

The stitching keeps it from getting worse and the cover makes it look better.

no, it's not as good as dropping $250 on your seat, but for $10-$15 and an afternoon, it can look quite a bit better than it does now.

mine has a tear in the same spot, but the fabric is still good. i haven't gotten around to the repair yet, but what I was planning is take a piece of HD fabric (either canvas or some vinyl); then use something like ShoeGoo to adhere that sucker on there. as a backup, I was gonna get some curved needles and stitch the edges with some thick thread.
