Whistling whining noise, possibly from transmission
Hi guys ill start off by a brief description of my toy:
1991 Toyota ext cab dlx 3.4 v6 motor 3.0 tranny 5 speed 85 front axle disc brakes all around.
Now i have a whiney sorta whistling noise coming from where appears to be the tranny. that may be the easiest place for sound to get through to the cab so im not set on it being the tranny. it happens at 30 mph and above and is constant sounding like a spinning whistle whine, if i touch the brakes at any amount of pressure the sound stops, doesnt matter what speed. does this sound like a tranny problem or something in my front axle or possible front brakes?
note the brakes have been a lil squeaky lately, could the pads be worn down?
any ideas or things to check on would be greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch.

doesn't sound transmission related to me. it almost sounds like front wheel bearings, or maybe something with the breaks. if the breaks are squeeky, i would start with the obvious, and cheaper first. replace the pads, and check to make sure the caliper cylinders are working right. see if there's any uneven wear on the pads. replace rotors if they are super shiny or warped. and if there's any vibrations, check that out. shake the front end down and make sure nothing is loose. hope you figure it out soon.

would blown wheel bearings change sound if the brakes are being used? i feel like they have a constant sound no matter the speed, with or without brakes. just speculating as i have had a bad rear wheel bearing

i didnt pay attention if the clutch was in or out but i do know that while in neutral at those speeds tghe sound remined the same. i used alot of elimination so that i could explain it thoroughly and try and eliminate the tranny.

nah, the more i think about it, doesn't really sound like a wheel bearing, but the fact that it stops as soon as you touch the brakes, even just a little bit seems like its kinda limited to the knuckle area to me, but get a brake job for sure if your pads are squeaking.

i love it to death, but its a pain in the a right now. my car blew up so im delivering pizzas in this and im stumbling across more and more little things i need to do on it. i cant wait to sell my focus so i dont have to drive this thing close to 100 miles aday! that pic doesnt show it but i added a few more leafs in the front and threw on a stinger recently. if i knew how to put links in my tag i would say go check out my semi build thread! if u search my name u can see the truck built!

I'm sorry , after looking at my post even I'm confused. You can isolate various parts of your drive train and braking system with the tools built into your truck (clutch, trans and trans case, E brake). Try all combinations to better understand the symptoms and have someone ride with you. To properly troubleshoot you need to know where and why.

the fact that braking effects it that drastically almost eliminate everything except the knuckle area (credit 1800's kinda guy). since between 30-however fast i was going braking at any speed over 30 stopped the noise. not just slowing down below 30 but brakes in general.

i checked out your thread. pretty sick man. i just have and old beater ifs, but i totally want to build a solid axle next year, and definitely want to do a 3.4 swap for sure.(eventually) i live down in the sierra nevadas and am so close to so many off roading trails, that's it's unthinkable for me to not be on them.
