what is this coolant system part? I need a new one.

Hi all -

I've been browsing the forums here for a while and have realized that this site is an AWESOME resource. Now unfortunately I have a problem and hope I can get some help. So here goes my first post:

My '93 pickup with a 22RE engine has some problems. When I last drove it, I noticed A. the idle speed was erratic - surging at times. B. there was a coolant leak coming from a hose connection.

When I unclamped the hose to remove it, a small elbow type piece that it was attached to came loose from its threads somewhere on the bottom of the block.

This elbow piece is totally corroded. I will need to replace it, but i'm not sure how to find one as I don't know what the part is called. I've attached pictures.

Can anyone identify the part?

THANKS!

It's the fitting that connects to the heater core hose. I'd just go out and find a brass 90* elbow fitting from your local hardware store to replace it.

It will likely require a BSPT type thread, a NPT fitting will not thread in correctly.

^^He's correct, it could have tapered threads. If an NPT fitting does not thread in easily then you'll have to find a BSPT with tapered threads.

That was very helpful! The part is 16261A. I happen to work across the street from a huge auto parts wholesaler that sells direct to auto shops. They were able to order it from Toyota for me. Should be in tomorrow. I was able to get most of the damaged part out from the block as far as I can see. Hopefully the new one threads right in.

Thanks for that schematic.

Hmmm, 16261A looks like a clamp to me.

Whoops, I mean 16261B. Nice catch. I know I didn't order a clamp because it was twenty bucks.

I took a pic from under the engine bay, looking up. An arrow is pointing at the the threaded hole where this piece came from.

Anyone know what this part is? I'm looking around online but haven't found anything.

Also please note the image is upsidedown.

Red face

That looks like one of the fittings that goes to the AAV I think it comes off the bottom of the intake manifold.

Got the part, installed it. Back in business. What does AAV stand for, by the way?

I'm planning on flushing the coolant and installing some new hoses.

Any suggestion on hose type? Is it worth it to run silicone hoses on a truck with 220,000 miles?

I'd not spend the $$ on fancy hoses. My 0.02......

Truck has a few new hoses and all new coolant / distilled water - running like a champ. Thanks all for the help.

Next project is to replace the thermostat.
