Weak points?

IM looking for a toyota to wheel, I dont really care what year (as long as its has solid axle) or if its a truck or a 4runner. My question is, do any years have weak points over the others? I get EFI is better then carb, but other then that? I hear the 83s suck cause of the smog stuff, is this true?

If you want factory SA, and factory EFI, the only option is an '85 truck/4runner

factory SA was 79-85
First year for EFI was 85

The axles got stronger in 84 and 85. Efi is good. Other than that the are pretty much the same as far as wheelin's concerned

Edit: Idk how hardcore your into wheeling or are gonna get into it but you will end up building theh same stuff up on any year truck (spring hangers, shackles, beef up axles, crossover steering, etc.)

The axle housing is stronger due to extra trussing, but the axles themselves (birfields) are not any stronger. If you are just light wheeling some forest service roads or forest land, stock stuff will work just fine.

More hardcore wheeling requires more hardcore parts. For my own style of wheeling, 33" tires, a spool, and IFS has worked very well for the last 4+ years. Now that I am going a little more hardcore, I am finally switching to a SAS with longs and hysteer. That and a pair of ARB lockers fell into my lap, so it worked out best for me.

Weak points often vary with skinny pedal application, and degree of difficulty. Obviously the more skinny pedal and greater the turn on the wheel, the easier the birf is going to break.

There are two ways to go, you can look for an already build wheeler or build your own. The most cost effective is to buy an already built truck, right now the economy is forcing a lot of guys to give up other toys, so I seen several good deals on Toyotas that the costs of the parts on them are more than the asking price of the whole rig.

On the other hand many of us get as much out of building your toys as we do wheeling them.

Id love to find an 85 with EFI, but people want to much for them here. Im looking for something kinda built already, but would like to do some of it myself (so I know how to fix it on the trails). I grew up around paint guns and body work, so anything other then tune ups and Im kinda lost.

Im looking for something thats street legal cause I'll have to drive it there and back. Id like to run the Rubicon with it a few times ayear, but mostly local parks it will see for now? If nothing really changed over the years (other then EFI) then I guess it doesnt matter whar year I get if its somewhat built up?
