Valve Lash

Okay, so as many of you know my truck has low compression on one cylinder.

A friend of mine did something or other and told me it doesen't seem like #3 exhaust valve is closing. He said it was probably a lash issue, and that I should adjust it. I am planning to do this tomorrow. I have a few questions:

1. Any tips for this job?

2. What bad things can come from repairing this issue, if any?

Tips: Do it when the engine is warm, and check it a couple of times if you havent done it before to make sure.

Bad things: too tight and you could get bleed by, lowering compression and burning up the valves. too loose and you get chatter and poor performance.

Good things: if its off, better performance, longer valvetrain life, better compression (depending on which way its off)!

Dont worry its not a super difficult job!

Maybe I am misunderstanding you but have you ever adjusted the valves on a vehicle before? Like colsoncj said, make sure your engine is at normal operating temp before you adjust them. It is pretty simple really. If you actually need help adjusting them let us know. If you don't already have a repair manual you should go get one. It will be able to walk you through the entire procedure.

Yes I have a repair manual but I was just checking to make sure that there were no special tricks involved. I have done valve lash, just never on an OHC. So I reckon this weekend I'll give it a whirl. Lets hope the compression goes up!

Oh and PS- the engine was rebuilt around 30k ago so I am due for an adjustment anyway.
