Question TJM / ARB bumper identification

Hi all!

I need help identifying this bumper:
http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n84372325

I'm in Japan, and I want a real bumper for my Surf - not snow plow that comes standard. The Land Cruiser 60 is almost the same width as the KZN185 Surf.

Which brings me to my next question:
Is it possible to mount this TJM bumper on a 185 Surf? I'll probably need to build some custom mounting brackets. I'm just looking for someone who knows about these kind of bumpers and can say that it is possible or a retarded idea. It's cheap, and I've never come across one for sale in Japan. So I really want to buy it - even if I have to work on some custom mountings.

What do you all think?

Thanks for the advice!

The ad says nothing about the bumper other than it's a TJM. Yours is newer. It's probably made specifically for the Surf/4runner. Japanese drive their 4x4 in the city - some even lower them. So this kind of part is very rare.

mine has a model number and everything etched into it on the back side of it. its a TJM-15 for a 90-95 4runner / hilux surf. I dont think that bumper would bolt up to yours because its for a landcruiser. it would look freakishly big on there too.

you can try a direct order from TJM's website. i believe they still ship to japan... the TJM bumpers are a bit more rare in the US because they dont ship here anymore.

Yeah, 15,000JPY is only about 150USD. So I think it's a good deal even if I have to mod it. I don't really care how big it looks. The 60 Series is ~1800mm wide - So is the KZN185. It looks like it attaches to the frame. I hope I can mod it. Anybody have one of these old TJM bumpers that can describe it a bit?

not sure but think it would be TJM17

sims not totally sure so do not spend money without being sure- but I believe the TJM model for US model 96-02 4Runners would be the TJM-17. I think that is the KZN185 model equivalent to your Surf.

Check also on T4R.org. And Denver craigslist had one listed just awhile back.

Thanks! I'm asking on toyota-4runner.org now. I'm waiting for the email confirmation.

I'd would not mind ordering something from the US, as long as the price of shipping does not eclipse the price of the part.

Here is another question. Do the 2nd gen bumper mount holes match the 3rd gen mount holes?

No and the space betwen the frame rails is not the same either. That bumper is going to look really retarded on a 3rd gen 4runner (even if you adapted it to work). You are way better off just bringing it to a shop and have them fab up a custom bumper for you. It might cost a lot more, but it will look appropriate.

I noticed the sides of that bumper also stop really short so you would have a huge ugly exposed section of body on the sides. I saw a 90's Yota pickup the other day with a brushguard on it that was for a Chevy or a Ford or something and it looked so stupid. It was too wide and too tall and I just thought this guy has no taste whatsoever.

Taste?????

If I was worried about looks, I'd leave the original bumper on as well as the damage amplifier. Actually, I probably would be driving a skyline.

Where I am, I don't care so much about looks. I care about smashing into snow and ice and better clearance. That's the only reason why I want to get a better bumper - well, and the occasional car I might crash into. Taste? Form follows function. I actually need a vehicle with enough clearance so that the meter of snow that dumped while I was sleeping doesn't lift the vehicle up. It's not about taste. Manual diesel part time four wheel drive for efficiency and power and the summer. It's too bad they stopped making them here.

So what I've done for now is take off the plastic lower half. I may end up building a bumper myself.

Form can follow function, but there are bumpers made that won't look totally out of place. I'm not convinced it will be functional either since you'll have to add bracketry to make it work and that weakens the integrity of it.

You asked us if it was possible or a retarded idea. Well, yeah I think it is - both possible and retarded.

Yeah, the weakening part is no good. I'm going to hold out for something for a 185.
