Redline Gear Oil for '98 4Runner
Hey guys - I just picked up a '98 4Runner SR5 and have managed to find these specs on the transmission / transfer case / differentials:
I have a '98 4Runner SR5 with a 5-speed transmission and the 3.4 5VZ-FE engine. I have the rear E-locker, but am unsure (and don't know how to check) if I have the ADD front differential.
Manual Transmission:
5VZ- FE engine: 2.2 (2.3, 1.9)
Oil type: Gear oil API GL- 4 or GL- 5
Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75W- 90
Transfer Case:
Oil capacity, L (qt., Imp. qt.): 1.0 (1.1, 0.9)
Oil type: Gear oil API GL- 4 or GL- 5
Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75W- 90
Differentials:
Four- wheel drive models
Oil type:
Hypoid gear oil API GL- 5
Front
A.D.D.
1.15 (1.2, 1.0)
Except A.D.D.
1.1 (1.2, 1.0)
Rear
With rear differential lock system (I have the E-locker)
2.75 (2.9, 2.4)
Recommended oil viscosity:
Front - A.D.D. - SAE 75W- 90
Except A.D.D. - SAE 90 (above 0F)
Rear - SAE 90 (above 0F)
I'm wanting to order Redline off of Amazon and replace everything: differentials, transfer case, and transmission. PO said that he'd changed the fluids (except front diff) last summer sometime. The transmission is being a little notchy, especially in 1st and 2nd while cold. Also, there is a noise coming from the transmission / rear end when I am decelerating and in gear, letting the transmission slow down the vehicle (if that makes sense). I suspect it's coming from the transmission because it seems to go away when I push in the clutch or when I use the brake.. I want to see if a fresh (and quality) fluid change remedies these problems.
How do I know if my front diff has the ADD system?
Should I just order MT-90 75W-90 GL-4 for the trans / transfer case / front diff, and seek out SAE 90 (GL-4 or GL-5?) for the rear diff? Or do people usually just use MT-90 for all of it?
Or 4qts of MT90 for the trans / t-case, and 4qts of 75w-90 gear oil for the differentials?
And if my math is correct, I'll need about 8qts total, right? Thanks for the help. Do you guys use a gravity feed to pour them in, or do they make a pump for the Redline gallon jugs?
