Red face Rebuild 3.0/Swap 3.4

Title pretty much says it all!!

I came across a 4x4 Pick up with a not running 3.0 manual trans .

I have other Toyota`s to drive so there is not that much pressure to get things done.

I have heard pros and cons about the 3.0 and have by chance never driven one or looked up close and personal at one other then a passing glance

I guess it comes down to what you want the engine to do and how it is taken care of.

I like the 3.4 I have in my 2000 Tacoma. thinking that would be a easier swap then the inline 6 like the 7MGTE in my Celica only because of engine compartment length .

So the question is it worth it to spend the money to rebuild the 3.0 or should it be a boat anchor . Better to spend the money swapping to a 3.4 Given the 3.4 swap will in the end cost $$$ more

Your thoughts Yota Tech thanks in advance

The 3.4 is a great motor and will beat the 3.0 all around. Seeing you have swapped motors in your Celica you probably wouldnt have any problems. But swapping motors for a beginner isnt something I would recommend. Just because there is usually welding involved and alot of other parts involved then just the motor, such as wiring and sensors. Just my 2 cents. Some bash the 3.0, but I have had one and taken care of, the 3.0 will go forever after the head gasket issue is fixed. If it was a direct bolt in, I would say yes. I have rebuilt and replaced several motors, but for me everything else involved in a swap might would be over my head. Im sure there are going to be several to say 3.4, but wanted to throw out another view. Guess it boils down to your skills, fianances and ability.

Ill swing the other way.....not like that... I mean ill vote for the 3.0. Im a fan of this motor. I beat the piss out of mine for a long time before it finally went. ITs not bad to work on, and it just runs so smooth!

Then I bought a 95 4runner, ganked the motor out of that and am now putting it back into my 92. I sold off all the other parts I didnt need as well as keeping a few items such as wheels, engine, 3rds and still managed to make money by selling off the rest of the parts on the truck.

Its not a power house, but there are something you can do for it, mainly headers. You have the manual tranny and that will help with power too. I DD'd mine for a couple of years with the 3.0, manual and 33s with stock 4.30 gears. I thought it was fine.

Good luck. Also might want to look into droping in a 4.3 Vortec

thats pretty much it ,whats the truck for ?

my wife daily drives a 94 4runner 3.0 with no problems , since i did the headgaskets a few years back its pretty much been trouble free.
But youll feel alot better driving the 3.4 , youll definetly be more comfortable with it , along with, probably better gas milage.

The 3.4 involves no fab work. It is more or less bolt-in. It requires wiring the computer to the dash harness, re-routing a power line because you have to swap the battery to the other side, and some minor trimming of the hood.

my vote is the 3.4. keeping the 3.0 is kind of like trying to catch piss in your hands. it can be done but in the end it is still piss........

In an attempt not to jinx things, I take back all ive said about the 3.0 lol. I am kinda falling in love with this truck. even tho i would trade it for a 22re version without hesitation. I think i will plan on doing a timing belt on it a little later and hopefully the distributor issue is resolved in that process. And yes, I do have 18+ trucks. More than anyone should have. Im not right in the head. but at least i hoard toyota pickups and not newspapers and pizza boxes right?
