rear diff question

My wifes cousin just got a 88 4wd 22r 5 spd. we were out muddin couple nights ago and on his way home his rear end locks up. i go out there the next day and help him take the chunk out and it looks like the pinion shaft tried to walk out backward. it was nasty.

ok after searching alot of sites this one included of course we come to the conclusion that he has 4.10 gear since he has nice pretty pink on the end of his shaft and we counted 41 on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion.

ok we go to the junk yard and finally find one with a pink dot and we had to look alot we found blue and orange. but anyways the gears we took out today was in a 94 2wd 22re auto and they had pink on the shaft and after we get it homw he counted the ring gear was 41 but the pinion has 11 wouldnt that make it 3.73s

is it different color codes for different years, i didnt find anything about that. and the way everyone talks all the colors match to each other

A 4wd 4.10 is the most common and and should easy as hell to find.

I wouldn't use the color code. If someone regeared their stock diff with aftermarket gears, the color doesn't magically change. You need to count teeth, or if it's still in the rig, spin the tire and count flange revolutions.

we did all that. thats how we figured out he had 410s. all i want to know is why is everyones info have a list of color codes and what ratio they are, if the color doesnt matter.

Bc they came with paint from the factory. Bt these rigs are 20 some years old. People change things. It's rare you will find a rig these days with 250k and still has the original motor, tranny, gears, etc etc.

If they were 5 years old or newer and had less chance of being messed with, it would be more reliable.

I've never heard of this color thing. My 4.30's didn't have anything on them when I replaced them. Best bet is to use the code off the door jamb. Has anyone else noticed that all these incidents lately all happened right after "Mudding"?

There's your color codes.

And thats what I am getting at. These rigs are old enough a dab of paint has a tough chance of making from the 80's til now.

My 4.10's that I pulled from my rig (23 years old, untouched from the factory, I have the service records) didn't have paint on it either.

you know its funny. i got on this site because my buddy needed help and thats the person i am. i didnt get on here to be made to look im stupid. yes we go mudding but thats not what tore his truck up. the nut on the shaft came loose and he tightened it back up after he noticed it was popping(the day before we went riding), he has only had the truck for a week, the guy he got if from never told him that he was having rearend problems, when we checked it out it barely had any fluid in it. and when he called the guy to let him know how dirty he was for sell him a pile he just acted like he did care.

i could care less about these damn color codes i was just trying to get unconfused because there are bunches of links thru this site that say you can go by a certain color and thats what gears you have, when thats not true at all. no, we did not go by the color code crap. all the rearends we found we counted.

but anyways the truck is fixed

People are trying to help and answer your question, don't read too much into it and get so sensitive.

Easy, big fella. Just trying to help.
