Question oil pressure on start up question

So my motor when i first start it up it take 2 seconds for oil pressure to build up as I can hear the timing chain rattle around until I see my mechanical gauge start to climb this is after sitting maybe half hour. Does this seem like a problem at all? Also it holds between 15-20 when fully warmed up at idle.

Please any input would be great.

So you have a aftermarket gauge.

That comes right off the block .

Did you install and did you bleed the line of air when you did???

Between 15 and 20 psi is good low end out of the Haynes manual is less than 5 psi at 3000 rpm it will be between 36 and 71 psi .

Then again you need to figure age and wear of the oil clearances .

Are you due for a timing chain when was it last done??

Yes the gauge come right off the block and is bled

the motor is completely rebuilt

the timing chain was just off and a good set of timing chain and steel guides were put on.

Should I probably replace my oil pump? it has some slight scratches on the side of the gears that touch the timing cover when I put the motor together they weren't there but taking the pump off the other day I noticed them.

You built a motor and used the old oil pump??

Or is this damage to the new pump??

Don`t forget to prime the new one.

I checked it and all was within spec, so I threw another one on that I had on another motor that ran fine and it's worse and runs low pressure when hot so I'm gonna switch back when I get home and get a new one once I get the money

When you say the engine was rebuilt just what all was done??

You might have problems a new oil pump will not fix.

If your timing chain tensioner was not replaced or you got a bad one that could be your problem

Could be you have to much clearance some place causing a internal leak.

If the oil pump you just checked was good a new pump is not going to change anything but maybe just a boost in flow because it is new.

it got new bearings, rings, block was cleaned, head fully rebuilt , timing set, all new seals.

I'm thinking it was the oil pump because I threw the other one on and it takes twice as long as before and instead of idling at 20 lbs now its at 5lbs, i'm gonna swith them back tonight and wait to get a new one.

I threw the other pump back on now it runs almost15lbs at 900 rpm when hot and about 50lbs at 3000rpms when hot a little lower than before and still takes about 2 seconds for the pressure to build up when first starting and I have a brand new oil filter on there with newer oil change, its only done it once so far but when hot the oil pressure went up but took a second or two longer for the timing chain slap to quiet down. i'm gonna put a new pump on and run rotella oil see what that does.

Oh and when I start it cold takes 3 seconds then instantly the needle shoots up its not like a gradual climb only really does that when fully warmed up

You did replace the chain tensioner??

Since the chain tensioner uses oil pressure it will always take to pressure builds up . You will always have some noise at start up..

Your oil pressure numbers are all within the specs I don`t know how much better you will get them.

But in any case good luck.

Sorry what I meant when the pressure hits is when the pressure finally builds up then the gauge goes up very quickly but not instantly. But it might be sticking yes and I might as well replace it and see if that helps

its certainly a possibility, especially if its a cheap gauge or has gotten a piece of broken timing chain guide up the tube or dirt.

I swapped out my pump and pressure builds up in about 1-2 seconds after sitting all night and the pressure is a lot better about 21-22lbs hot at idle
