I wouldn't recommend doing leafs in the front and coils in the back... that's just not right. you either want coils in front with leafs in back or leafs on F and R. 4.33-4.56 gears will not work well on a toyota with that size of tire. It works on jeeps but I believe the trans is geared differently on them. You need 5.29 gears. no way to get around that. I think someone makes an adapter plate for duel Tcasses for the 3.4 but that will probably cost a grand for the adapter and t case. either merlin or low range off road could possible have one. You are not going to be able to stay under 5K if you are going to do an SAS swap on a 3rd gen. sorry just not going to happen. could probably do an SAS swap on a 2nd gen for around $5000 just in parts much more for a 3rd gen. I just think you are going to have better luck running slightly smaller tires like 35s on a 1st gen 4runner. could probably have it all done including vehicle for under 5-6K and still have a much more capable than a budget sas swap on a 3rd gen. That includes locked diffs, upgraded axles, lift kit, bumper, winch and add a bit more for duel t cases. Why do you need 38s anyway? that's kinda overkill especially for a budget build. I see a few people running 38s with the 22re but not many. If you really want them it would work but it's just not recommended. Personally 35s have treated me well but mine is more of an exploration build not a rock crawler. I also don't have a toyota engine.

Trying to get the wife and dog to come with me.... Id just get an extd cab truck and backhalf it if it was just for me. But the wife never came with me because she thought the jeep was "Hideous and cramped". Each build has a purpose. This ones purpose was a spacious (for a crawler) has air conditioning, looks good, sealed cab, and can still do some decent trails build. While keeping it under 7k. After that its on to my next build Crawler/trailer queen/ugly sum bitch that can do some serious crawling.

okay... well you didn't tell me it had to look good according to a girl. just curious,have you looked at FJ80s? if all you want is a good off road vehicle that looks good, has a solid axle, is big, has good power and will last you forever an FJ80 with a lift kit, longfields, different gears and big tires might be for you. my search on crags list found 3 fj80s all under $5000.

Ok so new plan. The wife seems to have lost interest and to be honest the dog isnt much for it either. So Im thinking super lightweight rig. I want solid axle with leafs in the front, the rear will be coils and 4 linked. (Ive seen one of the guys rigs out here with that setup and I like it). I dont like the way that leafs extend the rear frame and always rub on steep climbs. I liked how my jeeps rear wheels had a zero departure angle in the rear. Im going to use yota axles/longfields, welded diffs, hydro assist, 4 cylinder, auto, (HATE manuals), Im taking the body completely off besides the windsheild, and hood. Not sure on gears and tcase (but would like to get suggestions) Doing a roll cage, and chopping the frame to accommodate for a wheelbase of 105-111" with the coil setup. Im wanting to run 37s. What am I looking at for total costs? Also wich vehicle should I be on the lookout for wich would be the cheapest and closest to my specs, in stock form?
