Hello,
new to the forum just got a '94 4x4 pickup with a 22re. After my first full tank of gas I averaged 24mpg out of it. which on these forums seems to be pretty good. I shifted at about 2000 rpm and tried not to got above 65mph.

But I have an oil leak that Im having a hard time finding. I have oil coating the transmission and dripping onto the drive shaft where it gets slung everywhere. But I dont leave puddles in parking lots. I think the leak might be somewhere on the valve cover but it doesnt show any signs of leaking. Any help would be appreciated.

could be your rear main, oil pan, or maybe the oil filter. My oil filter wasnt all the way tight, and it seeped a bit and coated my tranny.

Well your getting better mpg then evryone else in the world so you must be doing something right, or your doing your calc wrong. Since nobody gets that good in a 4x4 id say your doing your calculations wrong. Start there and let us know.
To give you a good base line my 2001 tacoma gets 71mpg steady.

Truck is bone stock, did a tune up as soon as I got it. new filter, plug wires, sparkplugs. synthetic oil. Did a fan clutch needed changing. And put the tires at 40 psi, theyre 235/70 15's

I'm not going to say it isn't possible, but I've never heard of it from a 22re 4x4. Word from the wise, never trust your gauges to be accurate. My autometer phanton 2 (decent quality if you don't know) tach shows a different rpm than my apexi safc2 which shows digital rpm direct from the ecu. NEVER trust a gauge. If you want real mpg, use a gps.

True the tach on my 5.0 stang reads up to 20% off. And as far as I know speedos are allowed to be within + or - 4% on thier reading. Im not sure on the reliabilty of stock toyota gauges. However, The truck is stock and Im a frugal person. I pretty much baby the lil thing because Im practically broke. I put it in fifth at around thirty, and avoid traffic. To be honest I dont see how 24mpg is so unbelievable. Seeing that the federal fuel economy web site rates 2wd models at 28 mpg highway and 4wd 20mpg. The truck has manual locking hubs which really help reduce drag. So why cant the difference be split on manual hubs?

Well let's just say your getting good mileage, sweet!!!! So onto your oil leak then, I would give it a good degreasing drive it and look under it here and there, see where it's coming from and go from there. When I got my truck it had leaks coming from everywhere!! Fixed most of them when I had it re-geared but the rear main is seeping a little so I let that one go until I rebuild here soon enough. Hopefully it's a simple leak!! And how about some pics of this new ride you speak of we all like pics

On further inspection it looks like oil pan or rear main. I hope its not rear main. those are always a pain and they Will leak no matter what. Its just a matter of time.

They both aren't fun, the pan I believe the diff must drop to do correctly but yes way better than the rear main, thought mine was horrible but after I cleaned what I could it wasn't as bad as I thought, I had ALOT of residual leaking from the whole underside of my truck the PO let the leak go so long I have oil caked 1/4 inch on some places. Can't wait until I pull the motor to degrease it!! Anyhoo depending on where you park and how bad it bugs you will be the deciding factor on the fix.

Being this truck is my DD. I guess Im gonna buy the seals and to to my mechanic. instead of doing it myself. I'd do it otherwise but I need it to go to school and work.

How bad is it leaking?? I mean is it puddling?? I'm thinking might be a pretty penny to get both fixed? I had mine done when I put gears in so I just paid for the seals. How many miles do you have?

There are no puddles. And it has 121,000 miles on it. It seems to only leak when warmed up.

Well seems like its not too bad but you need to make the decision if it's worth the labor and cost, I still have my rear main leak but like I said I need to rebuild soon so it didn't make sense to pay to fix it and then rip the motor out for a rebuild. I deal with the little drips for now have cardboard where I park. If you only have 120k you still have a while. Might get a quote and go from there. Let us know and post up some pics we crave pics!!! Question about the rear main...when sealing should I just RTV it? or paper gasket?
I heard the toyota seals > Fram seals as well?

Dont ever use rtv to sub for gaskets, or repair gaskets. If the seal is static like an oil pan, or manifolds, try to get something thats "dead soft", and dont over torque.

For main seals your gonna wanna put some grease or assembly lube on the crank and of the sealing surface and install it by pressing it on evenly until it seats.

NEVER USE RTV unless its a trail fix.

I hear it depends on the gasket. I see a lot of "use FPG" for oil pans, 3rd members, so I was just wondering about this one. I removed the whole thing. Figured might as well do my oil pan while everything is off. It's just...all dirty down there...
