Junkyard gold..!...?

Hey all, I figured the noob spot would be proper for this posting. I go to school up by the big pick n' pull and so it's easy for me to slip over there whenever. Last time I was there they had no pickups and only 2 4runners. I just checked inventory and they just got in a new 4runner yesterday.

Last time I was there and looked at the 2 runners, the gears and dashes were already pulled. I was thinking of going tomorrow and seeing if I could grab the gears out of the new runner before someone else does. I have a 2wd 1ton with 3.90 gears and am maybe planning on going 4.56 or 4.88 with 31's in the future.

So, whether the gears would be right for me or not they may still be a good financial investment to flip..? The website shows they charge about $100 for a 3rd member and I didn't see a price for the front gears.

I guess my questions are,

Should I grab the rear 3rd member for sure?

Should I get the front too? Even though my 2wd obviously has no use for it.

Are there any other parts that are junkyard gold that I should grab too flip to those in need?

Thanks YT!

Anytime I have gone to a junk yard and passed on a part for whatever reason I ended up needing the part later and of course it was gone. I don't know how it is where you live but any Toyota truck/4runner out here is completely stripped after a day or two. Keep your eyes peeled for a 82 supra Afm part number 22250 43110 haha that's what I look for. I love going To the junk yards

...also, I don't know a lot about the 4runners (yet) or working on rear ends in general (yet) So, is there anything on the 4runner other than the info on the model tag that I should take note of .. info I may need later about the vehicle the rear end came out of?

and did the runners have different rear end options? I think this one is a 94 ... basically I need to know if there is any other parts that I would need to make sure I grab while I grab the 3rd member... I don't want to get to an install or selling the gears and then realize I should of grabbed "that one thing"

Thanks all.

This Is what I use as a reference at the junk yard when I go looking for a third. The problem is they are always gone here. The guy I take my truck to when I can't do the work told me his nephew goes and buys any Toyota 3rd that will fit his crawler just in case. which explains a lot when I get to the junk yArd.

Well I got there ... and I got the gears!...well I didn't touch the front, just grabbed the rear third member. Came out of a 94 4runner sr5 V6 automatic. G254

So I currently have a G072 in my 2wd auto (as long as it still has what the sticker says it is) ...from the charts i've seen my current gears are 3.90 with 2 pinion and the third I grabbed is 4.56 with 4 pinion. (?)

I still need to do some research but if anyone reads this and knows whats up please fill me in. I need to know if I can swap these rear ends or if the 2 and the 4 make it a no go. I don't go mudding or crawl.. I just want to run bigger tires. Not even 31's I just can't stand the stock 14's on my 1 ton. Especially when I can't even get a 14" truck tire let alone one with a decent load rating.

The 4runner had a v6 auto trans and 225/75R15

I have a v6 auto trans ... if I install the 4.56's and install some 225/75R15 tires should I be pretty close to my current gas mileage and performance? Speedo be close to?

Sorry for throwing so many questions out there at once, I'll do some searching when I get some more free time but if anyone knows whats up let me know.

Don't the 2wd's have a 7.5" rear or were the v6's bigger?

ya, the G code at the beginning of my rear end code G072 indicates 8" rear end. I was mainly concerned with the last digit being a 2 and the new gears a 4 .. I have to do some research to figure out what that really means and see if they're interchangable ... I don't know if I'll end up using these ...I've read a lot of auto guys go 4.88.. I'm not sure yet.

I didn't mean to make this thread all about my rear end find though... There's all kinds of fun stuff in the junkyards and that's what gets me excited!!

Next junkyard gold items I want to snag are the glove box light, ashtray light, lighted cig lighter... I just need to look under my dash and see if my wiring harness has the plug ins for these lights.

What have ya'll found?

Not a whole lot in my area. I usually don't even bother with the local yards.

The trucks here are gone through the day they show up, and good luck finding a 4WD.

The V6 4runner 2wd's come with an 8 inch rear but they are the 2 pinions rather than the 4 pinion rear that the 4wd V6 and Turbo trucks have.

Same thing here man, all I see are Nissan's and Mazda's, the hand full of 2wd Toyota's are picked clean within hours.

went to the yard again and got a factory bottle jack and the speaker boxes for the dash (my truck was missing this stuff) I saw a 4runner limited that had the G144 code that is discussed from the link below.
I didn't have enough extra time or $ to grab the 3rd but I'm just curious if anyone knows if this rear is actually as rare as the article below makes it out to be???

Should I rush back and try to grab it? also when working on front diffs, do they have a 3rd dropout like the rear or do you just have to snag the whole diff? Thanks folks!

http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

"The FACTORY 4.88 V6 diff is unique!
- Axle code G144, white pinion paint code,
- generally came in 92-95 trucks/4runners with V6, auto tranny, 31" tires, and tow package.
- Housing offsets pinion towards ring gear, allowing ring gear to be thinner
- OEM Toyota gears are the ONLY gears that fit this diff due to the thinner ring gear. All other gear sets have thicker ring gears and do not fit.
- The carrier (case) is the same as the V6 diffs, so normal V6 lockers, LSD's, etc. will work in this diff
** V6 diffs are swappable with 4cyl and high pinion diffs"

Ya the 3rd's usually get picked quick here too, the pnp is kinda pricey - $100 for a third. I don't want to buy them every time I see them but I saw that 3rd's go for around $300 on ebay (?) that sound right?

So even if I get em for $100 I can resell for profit to buy more parts for me! I'm also gonna have to look into the front side b/c even though I don't need it, if I resell it would be nice to have the set, front & back.

Tons of toyota stuff here in alaska. I posted last year i'd get some pics of the stuff we have, well, that never happened as i didn't have time before i went back to texas. I'm back living in alaska again, and if the weather is acceptable tomorrow, i'll shoot over to the salvage yard i occassionally work at, and get some pics of the various trucks, 4 runners, and old supras i know we have/had. I need to look for the part to fix my erratic ignition anyways. And i'm not sure if it's ok to put this on here, but when i can't find a part, i go to www.car-part.com to do a search, as most of the salvage yards in alaska, are on that system, and they frequently ship.
