How slow should a 3.4L auto 4Runner be?

I went and looked at a low mileage 02 4wd v6 sport today and when I test drove it I was really disappointed! It was slooooooow! My 99 Tacoma 4wd 5spd with a 162k and 33's would beat it to 60. I have never owned a auto and I know they lose 20% in the drive train but should this vehicle be that bad?

The vehicle had a bunch of other cosmetic problems and I thought the 12K+ price tag was a little too steep so I backed out anyway.

If auto 4runners are this unresponsive and lack the giddy up I will have to continue my never ending search for a 5spd!

I owned a 99 2wd 4runner with a V6 auto a few years back and I thought it was pretty fast, that's comparing it to all the 22re's and 3vze's I've had but still, I thought it was fast

Sounds like that one needed a tune-up or something. A 5 spd Taco is going to be a little faster than an auto 4runner, but it's not that big of a difference. Years ago, I drove a buddy's '96 V6 5 spd Taco and it was slower than my runner (both were stock at the time). I felt the same way as you but the opposite. I think his needed a tune up too.

Okay, thanks guys. Maybe I will try another auto out then. I am really glad I didn't buy that one now. I was just shocked when I floored it and it didn't really do anything! I figured they should be a little peppier than that.

yea I have a 98 SR5 with the auto and it takes a second to drop a gear but once it does it has decent pick up and go!

3.4 with auto seems to be ok, but still slow. I was honestly shocked how fast it was being that I have a 3.0L in my 4 runner and it's an auto and can't get out of it's own way.
