How does the temperature sensor work?

Hey guys,
I just got a 95 4runner 3L engine and I just need to know if anybody knows how the temp sensor works. If it opens when it gets hot or what? Thanks!

I believe it is the EGR temp sensor. It's in between the firewall and fuel injection unit. Sorry first Toyota engine! Not familiar with it.

I think that one is variable resistance, resistance of sender changes with temperature.
