I just put 33x10.5x15's on my '89 Runner SR5 V6 auto trans. I regeared it to 5.29. The performance is right about what it was with the 28" stock tires and 4.10's. So, if you have a manual trans, go with 4.88's if it is not a highway driver. If it you are on the highway a lot and do not see it as a serious off road rig, 4.56's would give you better flat land mileage, but you would be sucking wind on the hills, worse than before...

Ummmm....he still has 4lo. You've never driven a truck with stock gears and oversized tires, have you? 4lo is still pretty damn low and perfectly capable of wheeling with 33's on stock gears. It's not going to be so much of a difference that he can't take it off-road. Geez....

OMG are you serious? According to you, you CAN'T go off-road with 33's and stock gears and you MIGHT be able to drive around town if you're lucky.
Good thing I went with 32's. I'd hate to not be able to go off-road in these Arizona mountains I'm surrounded by.

i have stock gears and 33x12.50's. i play around at windrock and tellico, which is rocks, mud, dirt, a little bit of everything. i do fine. you will be able to wheel. but if you have the money, drop in to 4.88's and be done with it. as for on road, i slow down considerably going uphill, and 5th gear is never used except downhill on the interstate. off road, 4 low gets me everywhere i've wanted to go.

that is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. have you ever wheeled with stock gears and bigger tires? apparently not since nobody can do it. runnin stock gears and being able to use 4wd are 2 different things what does that have to do with anything? bigger meats dont make that big of a difference in 4wd

i drive everyday with 33x12.5's 5th just wont do anything uphill unless you get a good downhill running start then your still gonna slow down.
4high works good in thin stuff, give it any thickness and 4lo is my best friend, i can spin 33's in most anything in 4 lo. even half dried peanut butter mud.
i also would like to know what the best gearing would be for 33x12.5's for everydy use. i want to keep my gas mileage where it is (it calculates to 18 but as i've read that means its gettin more. i dunno about any of that) but i want to be able to get it off the pavement to and not worry about them not performing good. any help?

well i have continued to ride my 33's on 4.11's every day, according to my gps mileage and gallons, i get between 19-22 mpg. its slow, very slow in 5th gear, but 1st-4th is alright to me. i love my truck, and quite honestly i'm keepin them, i'm just gonna build my motor to handle it, when i go bigger tires i will then go lower gears, but until then, i will continue to run my stock 4.11's. if you have the money, throw you a cam, header, and a cold air intake, and i think you would be good, or if you wanna go all out like i am doin here in the near future, bore, port, polish, cam, throttle body, injectors, header that puppy and do most anything you wanna do ;-) but to answer your question. seein that i run 33x12.50x15's EVERYDAY and play in the mud and anything else EVERY OTHER DAY (just about), you can definately run 33's with stock gears. just 4hi isnt gunna do too much for in in anything thick. hope your havin fun when you wheel like i do
here's mine on 33's with stocks
