I am new to the mod side of Toyotas. I've driven them for about ten years but now have the time and money to start investing into them.

I just got a 98 SR5 4Runner and would like to remove the running boards (rusted) and install new mudflaps. I would eventually like to also install new fender flares if I can find the right ones.

Basically I am looking for insight into the (1) steps of removal and things to be careful of, (2) replacement flaps and (3) ideas on flares.

Any input is much appreciated.

I have a 97 T4R Limited and the running boards are pretty simple. They are a basic bolt on assembly. I used a little WD40 on the bolts first, others used something like liquid wrench since the bolts are rusty, then unbolt the connection. I think there are 6 bolts per side.

since you will be under the truck, throw on some safety glasses. Dirt and whatever else will fall on your face. Just makes it easier IMO.

I found the parts for the mud guards at www.toyotapartszone.com they should arrive any day now. I'm getting excited.

Next step...

I've got two ten inch subs and amp from an old rig I'm hoping to put in the back without limiting cargo room. I'd also like to add some 6x9's to it too.

I was impressed with the posting regarding a 1 to 1 mix of acetone and Auto Tranny Fluid to achieve better results for penetrating rusty bolts to break them free.

air tools with heavy duty sockets will be an immense help if those running boards are rusted on there and most are....

definately! I had all kinds of garbage falling on my face.... In hindsight I would have worn a bandana or something over my mouth and nose too. Stuff falling off running boards mixed with PB blaster isn't as tasty as you'd think lol

This post is late in the making but I thought better late than never.

I did use the mix of acetone and tranny fluid and will say it really did the trick. I also have pneumatic tools so taking the running boards off wasn't really all that bad. I did, however, have a little trouble lining up the OEM SR5 mud flaps. I had to use some 1/4 inch self-tapping screws to get them to stay where I wanted rather than the black plastic screws from Toyota.

I also installed the subs and was ready to do the lift, but got a killer offer and made some money on the 4Runner. So I bought a 98 Tacoma ... back to the drawing board.

I have found several postings including instructions for removing running boards on a 3rd generation 4runner limited (2000 black and gold 2-tone). most have had pictures that are no longer viewable. anyone have a favorite posting that has good pictures before and after including the required replacement parts list? thanks
