exhaust? whats the best aftermarket?

Hi i have a 89' xcab truck. It came with a flowmaster 40 series on it and i think it sounds wayyyyy to ricy. It is a 4cyl, but i heard subarus sound deeper and throatyer then my yota. I want something deep and rumbly. It doesnt have a cat and its 2.5" pipe. Anyone have suggestions?

here's a good review of headers for the 4cyl:

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runne...ws/lce_header/

doesn't talk to the sound, but plenty of info on increased performace.

Welcome to YotaTech....when i had my 22re i had a custom intake and a delta 40 muffler with 2.25'' pipes it sound good but it was a little ricey then i added a Lce header and it made it sound deeper plus a new hiflow cat helped too .....i think 2.5'' pipe is to big for a 22re you may like the sound of a 18'' magnaflow muffler that should make it sound awsome

40 series is 2 chamber... switch to a 50 series, or better yet 60 series.. I have one on mine, with a header (which makes it louder) and its not ricey at all... got a nice mellow tone.. with the flowmaster sound... its also a very moderate sound volume.

My full setup is a LCE header, magnaflow hiflow cat and Flowmaster 60 series, all 2.25"
here is a little video sound clip.. from outside and inside(all 3 windows open), on the hwy its not noticible.. I really think it sounds sweet.. way better than the same setup with a flowmaster 50 series did on my runner. (sorry for the whine in reverse, 4lo )

Subarus have a horizontally opposed 4 cyl engine (same setup as porsche uses, only with less cylinders). This gives the engine a nice throaty sound even without aftermarket parts.

I can vouch for the flat 4 in the subaru's (I have an STI) Very deep and sexy. As for the exhaust on your truck I would say start at the front and work back, headers then muffler. Get some more ponies along with a nice sound!
