Compression check it and that'll tell you if the head is OK. If compression is good check the timing chain and cover as well. Could be that the chain is cutting into the aluminum and opened up a hole for the pump to leak that coolant in.

a 3.4 has an aluminum cover and chain? x2 on compression or leakdown test. i'd put my money on head gasket
im also fixing the same 22r-e timing cover nonsense on my '88 :| the cover looked fine and the tracks werent too deep, so i reused it. oops. pinhole leak

Fork, good point, haha wasn't thinking.
As for my '87 the cuts are pretty deep and I lose all my water into the engine within hours of it being full. Compression was great on mine and that's what led me to look into the chain issue and find the cuts. I'm trying to get the timing chain cover off currently to get a better look.
Is there a way to get the cover off without removing the cylinder head and without destroying the head gasket or I'm I dreaming too big?
