87 Samurai with full 83 Toyota Drivetrain...
Hey, new here. I just need a quick question answered. I just bought an 87 Samurai. Toyota 22R engine, toyo trans, toyo solid axles, toyo dual transfer case, manual locking front hubs. All from an 83 pickup/hilux I am guessing, seller wasn't specific.
All I am asking for is the lever positions for the transfer cases. 4H, 4L, etc... on both levers please. Noob to toyo stuff.
Also, do the front hubs have to be locked for 4x4 to even work? Or does that just act as a locking differential?
Thanks in advance!

the shift pattern on the t-case is shaped like an upper case letter 'J', 2-hi is at the top of the short arm of the J, drop it back and your into 4-hi, push it to the right and forward and half way up is neutral, all the way forward is 4-lo. The hubs have to be locked for the front tires to turn with the axle shafts. You can run with them unlocked, but ti will only be 2 wheel drive regardless of where the t-case is positioned. Post a pic of your front axle and a someone should be able to give you a decent guess as to the year. the trussing on the bottom is what differentiates the years.

Yes it is... It was built for rock crawling, not sure why the front end would be that way though. But it works.

Umm, left forward is 2H.
back left and right is 4h
Up right one is neutral
Up right two is 4L
Yeah the shackle is weird. normally ppl just use a plate to offset the spring eye on bboth spring perches.
Since they're both only off by 3/8ths of an inch
So its kinda funky lookin

Got the pictures.
Rear axle:
Front axle:
So does anyone have a clear answer on the middle shifter?
Also, which is the main transfer case? Or are they both equal? I have no clue if they have to be shifted in a certain order or not. Would I have to put a certain tcase in 4L before I put the other one in 4L?
Thanks again.

So, I got 2 different answers for the tcase. Is 2H on the left forward position? Like on the short arm of the J. Or is it actually the right forward position?
Code:
4L 2H
2H-N OR 4L-N
4H-4H 4H-4H

the one on the left is wrong.
the case in the middle will only control hi, N and lo with high being the top and lo being on the bottom.
the one you have on the right is correct for your rear case.

Alright thanks xxxtreme22r, appreciate it. Is there a difference between the two positions of 4H shifted down left or down right?
There needs to be a transfer case diagram somewhere! I've searched a lot and haven't found one, so I came here.

beginning to think that right one is wrong. Got to read up on my dual case setup again sorry for the confsion. It looks as though the shifter pattern changes when running dual. on the mid case it's lo N hi (top to bottom) and then 4lo N 4hi top to bottom with 2 hi up and to the left.

Okay that makes a little more sense. Test drove the samurai with the middle shifter in bottom position (H) while at normal driving speeds. So that matches up. Haven't had a chance yet to test 4WD yet.
What year/model is that picture from? Will it be the same for all toyota stuff?
Now, would someone be willing to explain proper operation of the tcases? What shifter needs to be shifted first and whatnot.

yea that is correct.
it doesnt matter which order you shirft the t cases in.
if you put the middle one in low then youre in 2 low
if you keep them both in high (the rear being in 2 high or 4 high) then you will be in 2 or 4 high.
put the middle in low and the rear in 4low and youre in 4 low low.
just go out aand play with it. again order dpesnt matter. just stop, put them how yo uwant and drive to see wht ahppens

Okay yeah, I just got back from driving it. Everything seems good. Thanks for the help on figuring that out. 4low low is crazy, gonna have to put that to use.
Can anybody tell the year of the axles?
