87' 4runner speedometer recal
i have a 87 4 runner with a 22re and a 5 speed it is 4 wheel drive and i was wondering how to change the speedometer. i just recently added a 4in lift and a set of 35/12.5-15's the original tires were 235/75/15's and the speedometer is about 7mph off. i was wondering if the was a way to change it. i have built many chevys but this is my first yota. and i dont know the first place to start any help would be great.

The only way I know of to "change" it is to re-gear your truck so that it's basically "factory" gearing with the new tire size. Otherwise you've just got to live with it. Maybe someone else knows of something else..

this thing is still my DD so i need the best gas mileage I can get i might do 4:88 but that is the tallest i would go. this is my gas saving ride i just want it to look good and have a little fun on the weekends. i have other toys i can destroy and that get horrible gas milage and not worry about it, but this one gets me to and from place and has to everyday.

You'll get better MPG with the 5.29s and that size tire as with any other gears. You need to get the engine up into it's optimal RPM range for best efficiency. You can re-cal the speedo with a correction gear box for the cable. I ran one on my '85 when I had 5.29s and 33" tires. A speedo shop should be able to build and calibrator box for you.

i live in lubbock, texas the tallest hills we have around here is the entrance to my driveway. it is about 2in higher than the street is. this part of texas is extremely flat. they don't call it the south plains for nothing.

the only reason i have 35's is because i got them from a friend used for $50. when they bite the dust i will probably go back with a smaller tire anyways so i don't want to get to far ahead of myself and be geared way to tall for a set of 31's or 33's.
