Twenty years here, mines Historic....no inspection, no emissions. First thing i did was remove the old exhaust. Next will be the EGR/PAIR. If no other reason, to clean up the engine bay.

If you squint hard and see the 3VZE as a bigger, smoother 22RE, then it takes the "slowness" out of it.

So i have spent multiple years of my life driving a 22re, a 3.0 and now a 3.4sc. The most years by a good margin where spent behind the 3.0.
When I was 17 I purchased a 22re 2x4 for a honey pot of a deal. Guy was a great friend, he had replaced the suspension front and rear from a 4x4 to give it a sportier stance. A hoot of a truck, pretty guttless overall if your talking raw numbers but the little 4banger FELT zippy. Lots of teenager shenanigans where endured by it, Full throttle clutch drops yadda yadda.
This thread has tons of info i was agreeing with 100%, except one tiny tiny tidbit, someone said the 22re is not receptive to mods. Ive spent a day on the trail with a LE 22re and its way way more solid than you would think possible from a old 4cly engine. Huge dollars though. But it screamed. hands down screamed, it was rad.
When I went to replace the 22re I thought a little more bottom end oumf would be just the ticket (sold 22re due to needing 4x4) for some of the tighter tricker offroading we have here in the pacific NW. The v6 didnt disappoint in the extra grunt, the thing takes a real ham to bork offroad with. Stock gearing with the 3.0 and low gear 1st is some SERIOUSLY good gearing for all but the trickiest maneuvers. it really has an incredibly forgiving power curve for most offroad situations. But it doesn't have that happy to rev zip feeling the 22re does for flogging and generally aping around. Both engines struggle with hilly roads and elevation. They just dont have that much there. BTW i ended up with 660k on the truck after 2 engine swaps. The engine is eating coolant a bit again. Im a crap 3.0 owner, i jump in on the coldest day and jam. Its been my thrasher for 18 years or so now.
I just bought a 3.4 w/ SC swapped rig. It rocks. I like it so much i let it warm up before i thrash it and everything

You can advance the timing a little, up to about 13-15 for some free HP. Id put money into gears before the motor.
Its not a fast motor. And go fast parts are very expensive and dont do a whole lot. Just keep it running good and youll be fine.
Also, do you have enough stickers on your truck? Could try adding a few more. Everyone knows stickers=hp

The 3.0 is the worst engine ever made. All they do is blow headgaskets.
They claim 150hp but its more like 115hp tops. They're complete junk
and no one should ever own one. If you just ought one, you screwed up.
Chances are, it'll take a crap on you within a years time unless you change
oil every 1200 miles, and even then its iffy. Sorry about your luck.
There have been half a dozen threads asking this same question this week.

PS the answer is "Not a whole lot you can do."

Do at least a catback exhaust, and do the ISR mod. Those mods will likely cost you the least, and you will definitely gain something.

what have you done to the engine? Exhaust bypass? Delete EGR? ISR mod? Curious since my 3VZ had 246k miles when I yanked it out. But my engine was abused badly before I got it.

It is far superior to todays engines, with it's fuel injection, and 150 horsepower from just 3 liters. And the Fuel efficiency is mind blowing.
