2WD lockers
I'm curious as to what my options are for my truck. I've been wanting one for a long time and I think this summer is the time...lol. Anyway, what are my options?
I know I can get a lock-right...but I heard they have had some problems but I am not sure if that is true or not...and thats like $300
I go through mud, sand, rock, road (burn outs!), snow, any and every type of terrain. I am thinking a selectable locker is probably the best bet. I am not looking for a $1500 locker with all the bells and whistles.
Which locker suits me best? (maybe limited slip/posi/whatever its called...lol)

An Eaton Truetrac runs about $600 installed. They are a limited slip ("posi") and will do wicked burnout I'm sure while aiding you in sand and mud. They don't work well for rock crawling, but I don't think that's what you will be doing anyways with 2WD. They'll be fine on gravel, rocky-roads and the like.
Your other options are an Aussie Locker (automatic mechanical locker, similar to a Lock Right), which is great for offroad, an fine on road, but for your application, it might make you truck really difficult to drive in the snow because it is so light. The same goes for the Lock Right, and Powertrax No Slip.
An ARB is a selectable locker and it would be good, but its a lot of dough at about $1000+ installed.

Yeah, I think an Truetrac also seems like a very good option. Thats really not all that bad of a price though.
The only reason I wanted to stay away from a limited slip is that I heard they wear out...and I would hate to take it out of my rear end only to replace it again.
I won't be doing any rock crawling, and I drive 95% on road...but getting stuck just sucks balls...lol

I have to be "that guy"...
Have you considered the fact that your truck is a 2wd with limited ground clearance, and you would probably be a lot happier upgrading to a 4wd before you start modding? Especially when you drive 95% on-road?!

Well, lets face the facts. How many people REALLY use or need 4wd? How much gas is wasted on 4wds? I get 26mpg...does your 4wd get that...NO!!!
Sure, I could buy an over priced 4wd Toyota for $6k, and then I fill up the gas tank and I realize I only get 18mpg, which by the way, new vehicles get WAY better. I've never NEEDED 4wd. I've been stuck ONCE, only because I was being really stupid. And I could have got out easily with a limited slip. I'm 2wd pro

what kind of "problems" have you heard about the lockright? After reading up on them alot and when i actually got one, i realized that most of the issues you hear about them is blown out of proportion. The aussie locker is more or less the exact same as the lockright. but for a 2wd i would go for just a limited like a trutrac.

im tired of hearing that 4wd rant. not everybody can just up and sell there truck to buy a different one.

I'm keeping my truck. I heard that lock rights some how break...or something like that. I was going to get one for my old truck but that didn't so well since I sold it.
Limited slip it is. So they don't wear out?

Sounds like a great limited slip. So, does it replace the whole carrier? I am not 100% sure on all the names and what not...lol.
Is this too hard for an intermediate mechanic to install by himself?
I can replace engines, (haven't done a rebuild yet!), axles, lifts, not really any body works...but I can do my own work. Thanks!!!

Truetracs will not wear. It replaces the entire carrier. You can install it, but you will need to take it to a shop to have the backlash adjusted. THis takes about an hour and cost me $80.
As for 2wd vs 4wd, if you merely want to go places and on the way you once in a while need extra traction, then a 2wd with an LSD or a locker will do fine. If you're like alot of us and you've caught the 4 wheeling bug (the phrases "sway bar" and "all wheel drive"make you grimace) and feel the need to modify everything you can, then 2wd isn't any good.
I believe 91Toyota falls into the first category.

I HAD a 4wd, just wasn't a Toyota and I didn't really enjoy it. Too big, bulky, steering sucked, cost too much in gas, and wasn't really a challenge, which I kind of like with a 2wd...lol
That sounds like a truetrac is what I NEED

4wd's aren't my cup of tea. I like having a different challenge. Especially when people say 2wd's can't do something...I am here to prove them wrong
