I am definetaly leaning towards the 3.0 eventhough it may have some problems from time to time. i really want the power and if i need more i will probably go for the 3.4 swap next summer.
thanks for the input everybody! it is really helping me out!

22re vs 3.0
My experience with the 3.0 was miserable to say the least. After ordering a rebe 3.0 online (lasted 40k miles) before blowing head gaskets and breaking rods. Look at the design failure . Exhaust crossover runs above and behind heads? What's up with this design? Excessive heat where they fail? Belt driven cams, plan on changing it every 60k miles compared to a steel chain driven on the 22re which go 285k miles? At last compare a v configuration vs an inline configuration. inline always was and always will be better balanced. If you want a 3.0 chose the legendary l6 engine . At last see how many folks have successfully put a turbo, blower on a 3jz? NONE. Also research 22repreformance.co . that's all they do is build great engs and racing engine . 3.0 by doesn't even make a good boat anchot. If you need more ponies go with a 4.0 vvti in your 1st gen. I own 2 first gens and 2 3rd gens with the 4. . The 3.0 I had went to the scrap yard. Good resting. I need to know it any YOTA fans have heard of or did a 4.0 vvti reto-mod on a 1st gen? Need a donar but plenty of 3rd gen FJ's rollover donors in Denver cheap.

Just because you randomly bought a "rebuilt" 3VZ-E online and it failed after 40,000 miles doesn't mean the 3VZ-E is a bad engine. It means that the quality of parts and/or assembly and/or maintenance was nowhere near where it should be. Many factory 3VZ-E engines have gone over 200,000 miles without major problems.
The timing belt change interval for the 3VZ-E is around 90,000 miles, not 60,000 miles.
It isn't super common to have the 22R / 22R-E timing chains to last 285,000 miles, but it isn't unheard of.

I have had a 22re that drove me home even with a windowed block. And have had one that I couldn't for the life of me keep running well. Its not the same bullet proof motor anymore. They are old and most all suffered from a lot of neglected maintenance. The wiring in both engine compartments is getting old and starting to get brittle along with the plant connectors.
Both series of engines have examples that went well beyond their original designed lifespans with little to no problems. The 22re seems more popular, probably due to the head gasket issue(s) in the 3.slow and its underwhelming performance, and better fuel mileage form a 4 banger. I was in HS when a lot of those 3.slows were starting to blow up. Most of the people I knew that had them towed with them because they had the "big" V6.
