Right. Had that. Do I check inside the number 1 cylinder if the piston is all the way up, or it will be if things are duplicated as in this picture? Then insert distributor at 12:00 and it rotates to 11:00. All done. Put it all back together. Seems I've done this- but had no compression. I know I had it like this picture exactly though last time I put the motor together.

Well, if you're happy with the cam timing, next is valve lash.

Keep in mind, the crank rotates twice to one rotation of the cam. #1 is up once on compression and once again on exhaust. Just cause #1 is up doesn't mean it's on the compression stroke, which is where you want to be on step one of LCEs' valve lash how to.

See how the lobe on the cam just passed the intake rocker and the dimple on the sprocket is coming around? With the crankshaft pulley at 0 that cam dimple will be about 12 o'clock and that's #1 top dead center compression stroke. At that position, begin step one of LCEs how to.

You need to put the chain cover on with a couple bolts and the oil pump and crank pulley so you can get the crank to 0 using the timing marks.

Don't worry if the shiny links don't line up anymore. They only line up once to set valve timing. Once you rotate the engine you probably won't see them line up again.

Mine lined up after four rotations. Still would like to know whether I did this right. Here are the photos of new head install on new motor with timing set. TDC on #1 piston is confirmed.
