Ok, it's all done! That wire that I couldn't figure out what it was, turns out to be the power source for the defrost/air conditioning fan. I just left it undone and kept goin through stuff untill I found something that didn't work and my a/c wasn't working and I hooked it up and it works now. It's weird that this wasn't mentioned in any of the writeups...

Kind of revive this, i habe read for bout 4 days on upgrading the alt on a 22re (86 xtra cab). And theres quite a bit of info. So i decided to dive in, first i started w all the grounds to 4ga. And then went looking in the JY for a 12si (already have an old 10si) ended up coming out w one from 99' blazer (remand). Tested at advance hitting 15v! Pulled pully from it (ribbed) and then the 10si so to use the v belt. Behind pulley and fan from 10si is a spacer i slid onto the new alt (cs 130?) and bolted v pulley, measuring it lines up the pulley to stock alt perfect. Done wire adds so to clip into factory harness and going tonite to try n fit it. If it fits (measureing says it will) ill let ya guys know what it took. I know its not really new info but just a diff approach. The new alt can be found on autozone.com for the 99 blazer its a reman too (3rd one down i think).

Not bad actually, cheaper than anything else. Besides I ran the numbers, assuming I was gonna buy all new stuffs, and it was cheaper than the TG shenanigans/alternator/pigtail/shipping charges/headache/....etc...and more amps...

There is really no need to go to all of the trouble to swap in a gm alternator when you can buy a high output stock alternator that will bolt into the stock mounts and plug into the stock wiring harness. It might require upgrading some of the wiring, but still easier to do than a gm alternator swap.

yup, the only thing I added was a 4 gauge charging wire. Everything else I'd all ready upgraded. Now I just need a smaller diameter belt...

OK, Daddy Warbucks :-) I went 1/0 welding wire.

I got free lifetime replacement and a stock alternator that is sold in almost every partstore in the US. But yeah plug-n-play is easier, remind me which part is easier.

Wow, well i started at 11 and its now 421 am, phew. So it does fit, tight but does. So out came rad tank, wash tank, entire loom w fuse block, PS bracket, old alt, batt. Used same belt, ran all new 4 guage in through the loom. Turns out the charge wire (factory) has two wires spliced and soldered into it as well. New wire runs direct to batt (fuse later) new 4 guage from batt to fuse block. Left out old alt bracket and need to make a really small bracket for tension and then done. I have pics of most of this for once its done. So make small piece tom and fire up to see how it works. Ps- yes i know u can buy a plug n play, but i got $10 in this so far, thats the alt from the JY. Besides i can drink more beer the longer i work on it, if its plug n play i dont need to be drinkin n drivin.

I had a plan years ago...no idea now...probably an automatic isolator with a red top and a yellow top backup. ULTIMATELY, when I relocate the gas tank to behind the axle, I'll move the OEM gas tank skid up flush with the bottom of the frame rails and put the yellow top there with my airtank...you know...one of these days...

Seen a slick setup using an econoliner gas tank. The PO had a dual setup in my truck at one time, some of the parts were left in.

It's hard having champagne taste on a beer budget.

He he he, yeah one of these days. I think I've heard you can trim down the oem tank to fit between the rails.

wire size

I know im posting on an old thread but i want to clear something up.

1/0 gauge wire from alt to batt is OVERKILL

your power demands do not come from the alternator at time of use they come from the battery. the load from the alternator is relatively constant and limited.

use: Alternator Rating Wire Size
75 Amps 10 gauge
100 Amps 8 gauge
150 Amps 6 gauge
200 Amps 4 gauge

more info @ http://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/...structions.pdf

thanks

Alternator Charging problem

Does anyone know if an 84 Toyota pick up with a 22r alternator has a fuse/relay?

I did that but couldn't find the proper belt size, ended up using a belt the same as the AC side (wider however )

My big concern it the misalignment between the pulleys on the Delco alternator and the engine/WP pulleys- I'm concerned that it will come off and possibly cause damage to the fan, radiator, etc. I believe the Toyota alternator's pivot bolt on the block to be smaller OD than the ID of the alternato, allowing misalignment when the belt is under tension. My solution attempt is ti remove that long bolt and add a sleeve with ID to match the bolt's diameter and OD close to the alternator's bolt holes.

I've had the dam thing in and out many times, as well as a larger Delco 140 Amp model, grinding the motor mount, choosing shorter motor mount bolts and grinding the bolt head, etc, ultimately choosing a smaller CS 100 alternator . I modofied the adjustment bracket bu adding another, angled piece, butt welded,.until I was able to get approx 1" linear of adjustment. I tried 6 different 1/2, 7/16 and 3/8 belts but couldn't find one the correct length. I found the AC belt to fit, although too wide for the pulleys.

Reportedly there is a Jaguar alternator of possible smaller case size that might fit better..
