Has anybody tried fitting a taco 16x7 alloy wheel on a SR5 4th gen 4Runner? (see attached pic for example)

I've been thinking of ditching my 17s and going with 16" wheels to get a little more rubber between the ground and the wheel, and I have an opportunity to get a great deal on a set of them. But I'm not sure of the offset on either yet as I haven't had a chance to measure them. Best I can figure from a little forum searching and Googling is they are both "JJ", which depending on who you ask is about 34mm.

Also, is a 7" wide wheel a little too narrow? I'm not looking to go much over 265/70/16... maybe up a size to 75s.

I would'nt see why not since the 4th gen uses the same 6 lug bolt pattern.

I don't think it'll fit due to the offset/backspacing.. But I remember seeing a 4th gen w/ 3rd gen wheels though... You'd have to ultimately test fit them since I never thought about getting 3rd gen wheels.

In another post you said me that the 4th Gen and the Prado 120 are very similar mechanically. Well, I've friends with Prados and they cannot use 16'' wheels because they touch the brake calipers. Somebody grind the calipers but this is a little drastic and voids the warranty...

I believe the prado's run 17" wheels which has the larger brakes (which is similiar to that of the sports/limited models). the sr5 has the smaller brakes so it might fit but I doubt it.

The SR5 came stock with 16s. The dealer swapped them for 17s (arg!) but the door sticker still says 16 is the correct wheel. So, in general 16s work on my model, but I just don't know if that taco 16x7's have the right offset.

BTW, I'll get measurements tomorrow and make a test fit... no tires, unfortunately I'll just slap a rim on there and make sure it clears the breaks and other parts. This, of course, only after I measure and make sure the offset is no greater than my current 17x8's.

Ok, so I did a little research on wheels & tires and found out I was misinformed about the "JJ" marking. A while back a tire guy told me that had to do with wheel offset. It doesn't! It is the shape of the rim where the tire bead seats. When I pulled the spare off this morning to take measurements, I found I was also wrong about the width of the 4Runner 17s; for clarification they are 7.5" not 8".

I also confirmed how to properly measure wheel offset:
offset = (width/2) - backspacing

So, for all you who are interrested, here are the figures:

2003 4Runner 17x7-1/2 J
width = 218 mm
centerline = 109 mm
backspacing = 139 mm
offset = 30 mm

2004 Tacoma DoubleCab Pre-runner 16x7 JJ
width = 204 mm
centerline = 102 mm
backspacing = 117 mm
offset = 15 mm

So, that will push my wheels out 15 mm (or just under 5/8"). How badly will that mess with alignment and handling??? Keep in mind that I'll be doing the OME 884/895 lift in about a month, causing the fronts to pull in a little bit (I think).

Either way, I'm taking the wheels. If they don't work out, I'll resell them and make a little cash to offset the OME cost.

If I mound them, I'll post picks here.

Lance, I put the wheel on without any problem. It sticks out 15mm farther than stock, which I thought would be a good thing (or atleast better that being pushed IN). Am I missing something here? Isn't this effectively the same thing as getting a wheel with LESS backspacing? (keep in mind the 16" wheel is narrower, so the smaller backspacing can get confusing).

4x4rnr, Don't worry, I think you're set with the new backspacing/offset. I had to dig out my notes on this, since it's been a couple years since I did my wheel/tire upgrade.

Your 15mm offset should be good. I have a 0 offset wheel (17x8), which replaced my +30mm offset stock wheel. I only have positive things to say about the wider stance (better stability) of the wheel. I've got approx 30K on the wheels/tires with no issues to speak of.

Thanks for the confirmation Steve, I'll certainly post the pics as soon as I get some rubber on there!

Now the big decision... BFG A/T, Toyo A/T, Revos, or Goodyear MT/R. It's a 90-95% daily driver, so road manners are still important to me, but the 5-10% offroad I want the best traction possible. I want the best of both worlds I guess :cry: . There are many threads here on YT comparing these, I just need to make up my mind and do it!

Ok, so it took me over a month to get them on, but here they are...

BEFORE: Original 17" rims with Michellin Cross Terrain tires (mich side sml.jpg).

AFTER: Tacoma 16x7 rims with BFG ATs 265/75R16 (bfg side sml.jpg)

BTW, I'm really diggin' the new setup. I'll have an OME lift on this weekend and post more pics with the lift.

I have a 97 4 Runner, cant tell if it base or SR5, no badges, has the v6 3.4
I need to know the tire size?
It came used with j 16x7 alloys running LT225-75-16 uniroyal liberators.
The tires work great, 40k miles on this set, as I mostly drive roads alot of miles.
However, The door sticker says 15"?
The posts I saw here and the links given gave me a size of
265 which is huge for it no?
I can get deals on other sizes in between like 245s etc.
Cant seem to get the info on the right size rubber!

If the larger ones would bolt on etc? I go through brakes a calipers pretty good clip but live in mountains too. THanks

It doesn't look like its been mentioned:

If you have a Sport or Limited (which you probably do if you had 17's) you have larger brake rotors at least in the front. I'm fairly certain the 16's won't clear them.

I want to put 2016 tacoma rims on 2007 4runner sport. is this possible? my current rims are 17x7.5 and the new ones are 16x7. one auto service center said that they do not fit but i put one on and it fits perfect. please help
